I am working on our plans for the upcoming school year and am wondering if Genesis: Finding Our Roots and A Child's Geography Vol. II could be used independently from the "Learning Through History" portion of CTC. How much do these two books correlate to the history portion?
The reason I'm asking is because this past year, DD did not finish PHFHG (4th grade). I have really struggled with the decision of finishing it then moving into CTC or just start 5th grade with CTC. After months of praying and talking to my husband, the answer just popped into my head while I was in the shower this morning! DD(10) will finish PHFHG using the left side of the plans (and science) and CTC's right side of the plans. I am so excited about this plan, but am wondering about the Bible study. Does CTC work better with the Bible study tied into it's history or should I just finish with PHFHG's Bible Study?
I'm hoping this isn't clear as mud, and I know it's not a life/death decision, but I am trying really hard to plan ahead as much as possible and make sure DD stays 'on track.'
TIA,
JoAnna

Hi JoAnna! We just finished CTC, and I do have to say that the Genesis study and the Geography study did match the historical time period oh so well. I'd be sad for you to miss all those great connections. Many moms do the left side of one guide and the right side of another, and enjoy that. But, I think it would be hard to start the right side of the guide when you are so far into the left side of another guide, and that it might end up undoing the balance of the guide and causing kind of an "off" feeling from here on out. I was thinking from a previous post that you only had 6-7 units of PHFHG left, but please correct me if I'm off here. As far as PHFHG goes, are you on the same unit and day of the plans for both the right and the left side? Or are you finished with some things and not others? Since you only have a month and a half or so left of it, if we knew that, maybe we could brainstorm a speedier finish so you could just start both sides of CTC at the same time?

Julie, Thank you for your quick reply! I can't believe you remembered my last post a while ago about being behind! My dd finished her math, dithor, and language (the basics) for the past year. I should have clarified we'd only be using the math, grammar, writing, dithor, and dictation from CTC. Since you said the Bible and geography in CTC correlates to the history portion, then we will save it and do it all at once. I don't mind feeling 'behind' in science, history, etc., as long as her language and math is still on target.
I am very excited to start CTC, but am also excited to finish PHFHG!!

Oh, I can see what you are saying here now. It sounds like you have a good plan to move forward with LA and math, but keep the rest of the guide intact. Sounds like a great plan!
