LHFHG with singapore 1A

Post by amethyst rain » Sun Jun 27, 2010 1:17 pm

We are using LHFHG with the 1st grade extensions. I did not know that the math activities go along with the K math and to find the activities for singapore 1A I would have to have BLHFHG. Do I have to be doing these? He seems to be grasping the concept without it. We are doing the activities that are listed in LHFHG and he is learning from them. Is this something that will always be one guide ahead though?

HOD reccommends that you EITHER use the Singapore textbooks along with the workbooks for 1A...OR...the hands-on activities that Carrie has written in the Beyond guide to teach the concepts. We're part way though LHFHG, and this coming year will be finishing that guide along with 1A. I purchased the Beyond guide to have the activities. I think they do a GREAT job teaching math to this age!! :D And they're a lot of fun!! :D

Here are the levels that have hands-on activities:
LHFHG - Earlybird 2A, 2B
Beyond - 1A and 1B
Bigger - 2A and 2B

After this you move to using the Singapore textbook/workbook combo. At this age, the kiddos transition from having the hands-on lessons to using the pictorial examples in the textbooks to help them visualize the problems. So, you won't need to purchase a guide ahead anymore when you're in Bigger as the schedule for 3A/B is in the appendix of the guide. (And several levels of Singapore are scheduled per guide after that, as well. )

I say that it's very worth it to get the next guide! You either need to put $18 towards the Singapore textbooks, or put that same $18 towards the Beyond guide that you will use the following year anyway. That's my thinking anyway. It makes financial sense as well as "good-teaching" sense. :D

Kathleen already did an awesome job of helping you out here, so I'll just agree. :D You either need the textbooks, or the Beyond guide for the hands-on instruction. We loved the hands-on instruction and preferred that. Personally, I would just get the next guide with the same thinking Kathleen shared - put the $18 toward the textbooks (which are consumable), or toward the Beyond guide (which can be used next year anyway) . You'd only ever have 1 year where you bought 2 guides, because the next year, you'd just get the Bigger guide as you'd already have the Beyond one in hand. Then, after Bigger Hearts, you'd just use the guide as is, because there are no more hands-on activities after 2B. HTH, as you think this through, but you have 2 good options to consider. :D

Thank you. Beyond is on the list to buy. He does well with the workbooks, but some days it just seems like he'd do way better with a hands on activity. :D
