Got my CTC box!! Yay!!!

Post by gotpeace91 » Tue Jun 22, 2010 7:49 pm

We got our box and I've been poring over the materials. I'm so excited I can hardly wait to start. I think the kids are going to love their studies this year. I already read most of The History of Medicine book. It is so interesting I couldn't make myself stop reading. Those of you who did CTC last year, how did you like it?

Just popping in to say I know how you feel. Congrats to you on your box arrival! I, too, will be doing CTC this coming year. When our materials came, I just sat there reading it all. I fell in love with all the wonderful books that my son is going to use. The quality of materials is the best with HOD!!! :D It's going to be a GREAT year! :D

HI! Congrats on box day! We are still working through CTC (14 more units to go). I've watched the love of learning come back into my dd through this school year. Through the use of the program (we used IYW I)I have seen her writing skills go from stagnant to pieces of work just blooming with creativity. The daily story-times, living books for history and science and DITHOR has improved her reading and comprhension skills by leaps and bounds. The history projects are so much fun to do. All the paintings she has done I've kept in a scrap book because they are too lovely just to file away.
I think you and your kiddos are gonna love CTC.
LOL so much to go on about. I am totally sold on HOD

Hooray for box day! We did CTC last year and had a fantastic year! :D I was so emotional and overflowing with gratefulness that I wrote about it in detail on the weekly check-in when we finished. If you have some time and the inclination, you can read about it here:

You have such an amazing year ahead of you with CTC! Enjoy it to the fullest! :D

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on your "Box Day!!" We just got our CTC box a couple weeks ago, and I, too, can hardly wait to start. It all looks so wonderful!!

I also wanted to ask "rainbowacreshs" a question, since we will be using CTC with our dd who is 12yo (13 in September). I'm SO glad to hear you say that you've seen her love of learning come back, because that is something we really need as it's gotten lost along the way somehow.
My question is: Do you do read-alouds for story-time PLUS have her read the extension books on her own?? And, if you do, which books did you use for story-time?? THANK YOU for any and all help and advice.
Love in Christ,
Heather (WI)

Hi Heather4Him

I started our year reading the read alouds to her. We have only done one extension so far. My dd at the beginning of the year was not an enthusiastic reader, her comphrension skills were not that good (her reading level is coming up progressing from a 4th/5th). As the year progressed I encouraged her to read her read-alouds on her own but I have kept up with the narration activities that are written in the storytime box. There are days though she'll bring me the (currently we are working through Archimedes) read aloud and ask me to read as she says "I just like how you read it Mom". Because of of my dd's abilities, I've limited the extensions to just the audios, simply because I know that for her to do the read alouds and the extensions would simply be too much for her. The Cat of Bubastes was a fun extension, but we kinda ran through it really fast...lol we took it with us in the car and listened to it ..ended up finishing it way before end of schedule. I personally enjoyed listening to that one too
We used the History option for the story-time read alouds.
I think I've learned a lot about my dd this year through this curriculum. I've learned to ask for excellence and effort instead of pushing at her for perfection. I've sat back and just ran with the guide as it is written, allowing myself to trust in what I believe God led us to. The payoff has been beautiful blessings. HOD has done this on so many levels for us. The smaller blocks/chunks of learning has helped her to not drown in an assignment but instead leave her wanting more. CTC is full but so carefully written so its never too much.
I hope this helps some. I think my biggest advice to you is ..you know your child best..you'll know how much to use and when. :D
Enjoy your year w/ CTC and I'll be praying that your dd will find that joy again.

Thank you, Jasmine! That helps a LOT!! :) I really appreciate you taking the time to share with me. I really feel God led us to HOD this year, too, and am hoping for a wonderful year (and the years to come with more HOD!) ;)

No problem Heather4Him! The coolest thing about HOD is this board. No where else have I ever found the level of support and advice for a curriculum. :D The ladies here are wonderful and are always willing to offer their own experience and prayers to anyone who asks.

Blessings!

gotpeace91,

I just had to pop-in to celebrate your BOX DAY with you, even though I know I am a bit late! I am so glad that you have your CTC materials in hand. :D We pray that you will have as wonderful of a year with CTC as we did this past year with our own son. He grew so much in so many areas, but I can't believe how much he gained in his knowledge and understanding of God's word and of applying it to his own heart in the day-to-day. He's still my sweet little absent-minded scientist, but he is maturing so much. :D We wish the Lord's blessing on your school year as well. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
