Any need to add writing program, 5th grader in Preparing?
I'm budgeting for next school year after this fall...yep, gotta do it way in advance! My dd will be in 5th grade in preparing. Will I need to add a writing program? If so, which one? She loves to do creative writing and is forming bad habits, although she doesn't like physically writing, she does enjoy doing so creatively without issue.

If you are using R&S for language arts then Carrie has said that, combined with the writing in the Preparing manual is plenty. We were not using R&S and were using Growing with Grammar so at Carrie and Julie's suggestion I added Igniting your Writing. It was a great program with 3 levels I could choose from and my reluctant writer really enjoyed it.

Tamara, we haven't used anything extra for writing this year for 5th grade. We used R&S English 4 with the creative writing exercises in the Preparing guide. The only other thing we have begun is one level outlines. We used the Ancient World Encyclopedia book for that. When we finished that, I added in a Medieval Encyclopedia book for that purpose.
It's been great!

So, if I'm using R&S 4 with her, the writing in it is enough along with Preparing's writing...other than needing outlining? Is that correct? I'm not sure how to add that.

You'll LOVE the Creative Writing in Preparing!!!
That was one of Grant's favorite things to do every week...and he really does not like the actual physical act of writing either. We did the exercises together and he came up with the ideas and I actually wrote them (then he typed the poem later).
Have fun!

I think R & S 4 along with the creative writing in PHFHG would be enough, especially since there are written narrations in PHFHG as well. You could expect more for her written narrations, i.e. 5-7 sentences once you have taught her how to do these fairly well, like maybe 3 months or so into the year. You can decide if you want to also add outlining, but I don't think you'd have to, though there is nothing wrong with adding it.Mom2Monkeys wrote:So, if I'm using R&S 4 with her, the writing in it is enough along with Preparing's writing...other than needing outlining? Great to know outlining will be covered in RTR! As I got to thinking about it...looks like we'll actually be starting Preparing part way through 4th grade anyway. We're coming up to being halfway through Bigger and we're schooling part time through summer. So, she'll only be a 5th grader in Preparing for maybe the 2nd half. I'm sure the written narrations will keep her plenty busy.my3sons wrote:I think R & S 4 along with the creative writing in PHFHG would be enough, especially since there are written narrations in PHFHG as well. As far as the outlining in RTR, it is covered as key-word outlining in Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons and as a step-by-step outlining of small segments of writing in R & S English. It will also be taught in the science box once every other week in RTR's daily plans. The RTR plans will start with the big picture (identifying main ideas), and then the subsequent guides will teach supporting details, etc. The idea being to start broad and then dig deeper. Since outlining can be done many different ways, I'm excited about our dc learning several good ways to approach it for different purposes. I just thought you may like to know more about how HOD will cover outlining!

That sounds incredible, Julie! Thanks so much for giving more insight to this area of study. Makes me wish I had an older child as well so I could go ahead and dig in to these great new guides! Alas, my oldest is turning 9 tomorrow though...and I wish I could keep her 8.my3sons wrote:As far as the outlining in RTR, it is covered as key-word outlining in Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons and as a step-by-step outlining of small segments of writing in R & S English. I didn't get this kind of education in school. Maybe I should start myself in a guide to stay ahead of my kids!! LOL
