How long for Bigger

Post by StephanieF » Tue Jun 08, 2010 1:03 am

I'm thinking of starting Bigger in the fall with ds7 and was wondering how long it should take a day. We will be using PR2 and MOTL and our own Bible study but everything else from Bigger. I'd like our afternoons free to read SOTW and other books so ideally would just be working in the mornings. Is this possible?

i just finished bigger with my second child.

With my eldest who was not a fan of Homeschooling, bigger on a good day took 2.5 hours. On a bad day 4 hours to complete. (inc. DITHOR)
We also would skip some of the art etc. to just get the basics down.

With My youngest who gets me off on rabbit trails constantly! We averaged 1 hour and 30 minutes. (no DITHOR)
I kept being amazed at how short and FUN! it was with my second one. :-)

I think its all about the child willing 1.5-2 hours, unwilling as long as it takes

Yep, it was about 2 hours for us. Longer on a bad day (which entailed the dreaded Saxon Math...once we switched we no longer had those 4 hour days).

2 hours was our average.

We didn't do DITHOR. It just isn't something that we've been able to successfully work in juggling homeschooling 3 all in different HOD guides.

Hi Stephanie, and welcome to the board! :D We did Bigger Hearts with our oldest ds a few years back, and began it half-speed with our middle ds (we're now on summer break). :D LOVED it! :) Anyway, it helped me to have the breakdown of boxes in time increments. I could visualize my day, and I could make a solid schedule to follow for it. Here's that link in case this would be helpful:
BHFHG time it takes:

For dc on the younger side of the age range of doing BHFHG, I think it can take longer, like 2 1/2 to 3 hours. But for dc on the middle to upper age range for BHFHG, it takes around 2 hours. It also makes a difference what they've done previously, for example, even though our ds was on the younger age range for BHFHG, because he was an early reader and writer, and because he'd done Beyond LIttle Hearts (which prepared him for Bigger so well), it still took him around 2 hours. I think you'll enjoy Bigger Hearts so much, and I look forward to getting to know you better here on this board! :D HTH!
