Beyond and Math Question

Post by inHistiming » Fri Jun 04, 2010 1:00 pm

I'm wondering if the math games/ideas Carrie has included for each day can still be used if we're not using Singapore. My son is actually about halfway through his 1st grade Saxon math, even though he's just finishing up K, and will continue on with that through next year. (I bought the level 1 book by mistake thinking it was the first level, but stuck with it once I realized he was doing so well with it) I am anticipating finishing his curriculum by December if we keep working the way we have. We've been going slowly, but I still think we'll finish the 60-some lessons by then. Would it be appropriate to just use the suggestions in the manual for his math the rest of the year or should I go on to his level 2 book? I want to make sure he doesn't 'lose' any concepts, but I'm not sure he'll be ready to move on at that point....so far he's doing great. Anyway, I hope this is clear. Any ideas or suggestions for what I should do?

For those who are familiar with what we're using (or were planning to use) and may be confused, we have decided to use Beyond with him instead of LHFHG and go through it over 1.5 to 2 years. We think this will work better for us over all b/c it will enable us to go more slowly with him and know he's still at an appropriate level, rather than moving through LHFHG at regular pace and struggling to get ALL the kids' schooling in each day. That's been a problem in the past, and with a toddler, and then a newborn arriving in the fall I expect it could again be a little hairy.

Anyway, I would so appreciate any insight.

Hi, I went through Saxon 1 and 2 with one of mine, now 11yo. You will find that the beginning of Saxon2 is a review of the end of Saxon 1, and much of Saxon 1 is repeated, so you should be fine just going on to Saxon 2 when you finish Saxon 1, especially if he has understood everything in Saxon 1.

Or you could move right into Singapore 1A & B WITH the activities in Beyond. Grant was ready for 2A in Singapore when we'd finished Saxon 2. Not sure if you're wanting to move to Singapore or stick with Saxon, but that's what I'd do if I was switching. I think it would free up a HUGE hunk of time for you to switch though! I know that even though Grant was breezing through Saxon, it took us WAY more time to get through the lesson daily than with Singapore...and with Singapore he really has to think.
