I have no experience with Phonics programs at all. My oldest played on starfall and picked up reader books; now she reads. I skipped Phonics with her. I know I'm not going to be able to do that with my youngest, so can you please tell me why you've chosen R&S for English/Grammar and not Phonics? I was going to start R&S English 1 with my dd this fall until I chose to go with HOD. I am very please how your Language Arts is laid out in Beyond, by the way, not complaining at all. We bought the Emerging Readers to go along with Beyond, which is right at her skill level. I'm just curious as to why you don't recommend R&S as a Phonics option?
Thank you and Blessings!

Re: Why not R&S Phonics?
I can't answer for why Carrie decided not to have R&S Phonics as an option. But I can tell you why it may be difficult to use for a younger student. R&S Phonics was designed for use with a 1st grader and it moves through the phonics quickly. We are using it as a review for my DD and it seems to work out ok for this purpose. But there is no way my little guy who will be learning it all from scratch would be ready for this type of program for his first time through phonics. Hope that helps.

Hi!
Welcome! Here is a link to a thread that discusses the "why's" of HOD's choices. I found this to be an EXCELLENT thread to go through, and it may answer your questions!

What an amazing resource of information on the "whys" thank you! The more research I do into older posts, the more grateful I am to have found HoD.Busymomma1 wrote:Hi!

Re: Why not R&S Phonics?
We use R&S Phonics (along with the rest of their BNRS) and absolutely love it. I really appreciate how HoD allows a parent to choose their own program for phonics. I will say there is a lot of writing in the R&S Phonics workbooks, which might be a deterrent for some; however, for my ds it was the perfect fit. Having the combination of writing, hearing, seeing and saying the phonics made all the world of difference for him. I think, though, that each child is different and what works for some may not for others. (ex. Many rave over OPGTR, but it wasn't successful with my ds.)Cindie2dds wrote:I have no experience with Phonics programs at all. My oldest played on starfall and picked up reader books; now she reads.
