2 girls using Emerging readers
2 girls using Emerging readers
Hello everyone! I have two daughters who will both be using Beyond this year with the emerging readers. My question is, how is that going to work? I seem to recall someone saying that the Beyond guide had other emerging readers listed. Should I purchase these? Obviously I could just have them take turns. Has anyone else done this? One dd has a photographic memory so she would either have to read first or not be within earshot if her sister reads first. We have had more than a few instances where we thought she was reading when in fact she was just reciting what she remembered us reading. Or, do your children read silently to themselves? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Re: 2 girls using Emerging readers
I had my two in the emerging readers at the same time. My ds wasn't as strong of a reader as his ds so I chose the easier Bible for him and the more difficult one for her. I let her go a little faster so that she was a couple of weeks ahead of him. When we got to the end, I had her read a couple of other books that I had around here until he finished all of the readers. The one thing I did do together is the Christian Liberty Nature reader. It had such great information in it that I decided we would do it all together. So I would have him read one assignment then ask him one or two of the questions and have her answer the remaining question. I would then have her read the next assignment ask her a couple of the questions and him one of the questions to go with that reading. That way we all learned the nature stories together and they got practice reading to and listening to their peer. On all of the other readers, they read to me while the other one worked on handwriting in another room far away and then we would switch. It worked out well because they each had some quiet time to write and each had some one on one time with me.

Re: 2 girls using Emerging readers
This is the self-same situation that I am in on a daily basis with my twin daughters, age 7. We started Beyond this year half-pace and 1/2 way thru TRL. I had to start reading with each one individually, and that has worked out very well. Our dilemma was that I have one dd that is a stronger reader than her sister, and my dd that was coming along at her own pace was upsetting herself sitting and listening to her sis read. So we started having "alone" sessions where each child was able to read with me with no one listening in, and everyone now enjoys that time each day, especially Mama.
They are both at different stages of the emerging readers schedule, each reading at her own pace and ability level. We are excited to celebrate individual milestones with no comparisons being made, and each of my dds can shine and feel proud of her own accomplishments and strides. It can be a bit tedious at times, reading the same material and repeating lessons, but I'm confident that this is meeting the needs of my children. I can put up with most anything to see them proud of their own ability and not feeling inferior by comparing themselves to each other.

Re: 2 girls using Emerging readers
You have two great ideas here already!
I like the ideas of either having one a bit further ahead on a different book, or otherwise having separate reading sessions. We just finished the ERS last year, and it only takes about 10 minutes (give or take a few) to finish the readings and do the 3 oral comprehension questions. I think doing it separately either of the ways already mentioned would be a good way to go as reading is so important and both need to be very accountable for progress to be sustained. HTH!
