Got our emerging readers today and...

Post by MamaPajama » Tue May 04, 2010 4:05 pm

DS wants me to read one to him already. What should I do? It's one that he won't be reading until very late in the set, so part of me feels like it wouldn't hurt. But the other part of me doesn't want him to know the story until it's his turn to read it.

I personally try to keep the school books new until we use them. Then the kids are welcome to read them as much as they want. I find that my kids are not as interested in reading a story the second time because they already know the story line.

I agree...hide them if you must, and promise a new book from the library asap :D

If it were me, I'd tell him that he has to wait and then I would hide the books. Out of sight, out of mind! Like the other ladies said, I don't let my dd even see the books before we use them, or she would be begging me to read them to her or to let her read them herself! Best wishes! :D

Thanks ladies for keeping me strong! You all answered in the same way my gut was swaying. Unfortunately my kids were right there at the door when the books were delivered. Otherwise I would have hidden them right away. Now to find a place for them all.

Lock them up! Hide them high. Don't give in! You are going to find that he is really going to want to read them himself after all that anticipation. But you will ruin the comprehension questions if he knows the story. My two little ones try to read the end of our story time books in Beyond. I have to hide the book every time after I read it. My 8 year old got smart and checked one out at the library with her daddy. They are sneaky little critters.
