Does HOD have a timeline?

How is it?
Is it a notebook ? Or just suggestions on how to make one?
Does the program include timeline figures like Sonlight or do we have to buy( or make ) them?
Does it include notebooking pages for science and history for the students and where can I see samples of them? Mainly interested in Beyond and Bigger .

Yes we have time line.
You are instructed to make one the first time you do it. In beyond it covers 1400-1800 and mine is on a piece of card stock 8.5 X 11 sheet
As you finish a mile stone that Day 5 you add to your timeline.
The one I made for Bigger (its been a while) I made inside a Manilla file folder starts at 1450-1950 And the child is supposed to add to it as part of Day 5

Science in Beyond does projects and experiments and the text has "work sheet type" stuff in it. But you have fun art projects to do as well.
It changes in Bigger to the scientific method, The child has quality science texts (small square books) and with each experiment the child is asked to be the scientist. Ask a question decide on a theory, preform the experiment and then draw conclusions. The child draws a picture of the experiment and then writes the conclusion.

In beyond the art projects are often linked to the history stories, looking at her notebook now.. one picture of Richard running away from the Jamestown settlement. Loves tulip from a story in Holland. map of Mass. and the cape, a candle picture of how a girl scared away the Native Americans with a sparkler candle. A "indian" blanket woven out of paper. Wow my kid is getting a huge kick out of looking at them and has "stolen" her note book away!

In bigger the notebook pages are more formal and are done on Day 5 as well. I'm sure one of the ladies can pull you over to the Weekly check in part of the boards where there are many photographs of these types of projects.

I was wondering the same thing. If I already have the Book of Time can I easily use the HOD dates and suggestions to add to that?

Yes, you can! That is exactly what I did with my older boys as we chugged our way through Preparing this year. My middle ds did the timeline as written in Preparing. Honestly, I think he enjoyed,comprehended and remembered more than his older brothers because he created and wrote all the information vs. just printing, coloing and glueing. No matter how you do it - a timeline is better than no timeline!

Tansy gave you great descrptions of what's in the 2 guides. Have you read the intros for those 2 guides? If you read through them, it should help give you a picture of the different things that are done in response to the history & science readings.

I haven't done Beyond yet, but I know in Bigger that throughout the week in response to our history reading we had hands-on activities, geography, vocabulary, notebooking, timeline entries, art, oral narration... In science, the weeks include oral narration, science experiments (with and without lab sheets), and notebooking pages.

We used plain old computer paper for our notebooking and lab sheets. The directions tell you what to include at this level. Then we stored the completed pages in plastic sleeves in a 3 ring binder. (I know that starting with Creation to Christ, you do purcahse beautiful student pages that the kids use throughout the year in a special history notebook.)

We followed HOD's reccommendations for the time line as well. I know that Carrie has shared that they planned it so that the kids draw their own pictures and write the event/person and date so that it's more personal and memorable for them. (Not as "professional-looking", but I know for us that's not a goal.) Here's a picture of ours as we were just starting Bigger...

I am a HUGE fan of the activities in HOD's guides! I'm not one who was able to get these done easily & consistently before the HOD plans. They are quick, easy (for my kids to do themselves ), memorable (reinforcing the point of the lesson), and really use things that I have on hand! My kids are big fans, too, because they love them and are especially glad that mom doesn't skip them!
