LHFHG Math: Earlybird math necessary?

Post by Sue G in PA » Wed Apr 21, 2010 5:49 pm

I don't have Singapore Earlybird Math. From what I see in the samples, my dd4 is waaayyy beyond this. However, I do not think she is ready for Singapore 1A/1B. Could I just do what is in the guide or should I get Earlybird Math anyway? She likes workbooks and doesn't mind "easy stuff" as she calls it. :)

I would start her exactly where she fits. I believe there is a 1A/1B alternate schedule in the appendix for children that are farther along. Someone correct me on that if I am wrong I do not have my LHFHG manual with me. But even so you can definitely do the math at her pace. None of my kids have been on target exactly with the guides for math and it always works just fine. In LHFHG we did the activities even though we were off. It was fun. :D Anyway I would definitely start your child where they fit best. :D Only thing I would say is be careful not to get them placed ahead of themselves because Singapore is really easy and then all of a sudden they are doing multiplication. I mean the kids do not realize they are doing multiplication but really they are very early on. I love Singapore. Wish I had started all my kids on it. It teaches the hard stuff so naturally they do not even know it is hard. It's like magic. Has hands down been the easiest math we have used. :D

You could start her in the middle of the book or in 2B. I know it is hard to see everything they do just from the samples, but Singapore does take off. We are not on schedule with math and it works out fine. I just tab the math page we are on. Some of the things seem really easy and some are not as easy. They have the student learn all of the number words, which is interesting considering technically a kindergartner is not reading yet. There is plenty of addition and some subtraction, weights and measuring, telling time, learning tens and ones and so on. I don't know if that helps, I think a lot depends on the age of your child also. The books are fun and the activities are fun, so she would probably enjoy it. My son loves it because we do things with marshmallows and raisins and he gets to eat them afterward.

I love Singapore as well. We have never used Earlybird K...always went right into 1A/1B. However, I do know that 1A starts easy and then really ramps up. I don't know if dd4 could do it right now. Maybe. I plan to do all the activities listed b/c they look fun! As for the books...I'm just not sure. There is only one Earlybird set out now, right? Just A and B. Has it changed?
