LHFHG for a K and a 2nd or keep seperate?
LHFHG for a K and a 2nd or keep seperate?
New here...
So, does it sound great to start with a K and 7 1/2 yr advanced child in LHFHG?
Don't want to go to fast with ds K as his skills are slow and the dd will be in 2nd grade. She's finished History for Little Pilgrims this yr, moving on to Singapore 2A, finishing Explode the Code 4. LOVES history and science. I could always find EXTRA stuff for her to do- right? I just want to make sure she gets in on all the wonderful history programs HOD has for the future...
And when they move up to Bigger she can do the extension packs? Am I right on this?
I'd like to keep these 2 in same program as I have a 2yr and 1yr old that will be in the same program in the future.
OR- I can put her into Bigger (she places better there) and do 1 or 2 yrs in Little for my K.
But in the future that would keep me in at least 3 different HOD programs.
Let me know what you think ..
I am so excited as I was called to homeschooling, just finished 1st with my daughter and God has been leading me to HOD over and over again. It sounds like such fun.
Thanks Carrie!

What would bother me is that your older child is placing two guides above your younger. If I were you, I would go with two guides. That way, if your younger dc needs to slow down, you can. Your older dc will also likely get much more out of a guide that is at her level than she would a guide that is designed for a much younger child.
If you HAVE to combine them, I would probably step up to Beyond and just do it half-speed with the younger and full speed with the older. That way, you hit in the middle. Of course, this would be my second choice - as first I would prefer to just use two manuals.

Re: LHFHG for a K and a 2nd or keep seperate?
i agree with Tree House
I actually contemplated putting my dd 5 and ds 6.5 (currently) together .Daughter is going to do LHFHG for K next year. I have decided to go ahead and keep them separate and put son in Beyond for 1st grade with 2nd gr level reading. He just seems to be advanced in some ways and i don't want comparing ( he already does this). He needs to be challenged . LHFHG is just perfect for where my daughter is at.
Personally, i think it would be tough to keep them together based on their abilities/age.
I also 2nd Tree house's 2nd choice IF you really have to put together. at least if you are doing LHFHG and Bigger, you wouldn't be doing back to back guides.
That is what i will be doing. It is just what i think is best for my family and for me. i have a 2yr old so the age span btwn she and my other daughter is 3 yrs. By the time she really starts into HOD, i should have things going on a nice routine and the eldest would be able to do some things on his own and each older can do things with the youngest when i have to work independently with a child. That is the plan anyway.
Glad to have you at HOD

Re: LHFHG for a K and a 2nd or keep seperate?
Welcome!!
It sounds like you have such a sweet family.
God is so good at leading people to HOD! I know you will love it! Figuring out the best placement for your children & your family as a whole is the hard part- once you get that figured out- you are all set- & are ready for happy homeschooling!
I think the decision of whether to combine or not to combine is so tricky...
we want our children to succeed & do well- but not be pushed too hard & become frustrated... After reading this post (& your other posts)... I think that is going to have to be your first decision.
But, know that either way you go- you have some really good options!
At first I was planning to combine my oldest girls & that is what we are doing this year (although we are only using LHTH). It has gone very well
, but after struggling through the decisions for next year- my husband & I have come to a peace with splitting my twins (older girls) up from their younger sister. I like this for various reasons... they will all be at the level they should be at- not too easy or too hard... the younger will be forced to answer her own questions...one/two of them can play with my younger child/ren while doing school with the other(s)... the list goes on.
But, we will also be using at least 3 HOD programs at a time. When trying to decide, Julie (my3sons- editor of HOD & sister to Carrie) suggested that when my twins are in Beyond, my younger daughter can take 2 years to go through LHFHG... thus creating a year in between teaching each guide. I like that idea a lot (although I will see how things are going & if that is best for my children/our family at that time)! Maybe something like that would work for you- if combining does not seem like the best fit. Otherwise, I think combining in LHFHG could work well too... with a bit of tweaking for your older daughter (you may want to decide if you would want to go through History Stories for Little Pilgrims again, etc.). But, I think I like the idea of combining the right side of Beyond (& doing the left side of LHFHG with K son) a little better.
Hope this helps somewhat- & doesn't just make you more confused! Praying that you will find what works best for you family!!
Jessica

Re: LHFHG for a K and a 2nd or keep seperate?
Okay- enough already...
I was so excited to get started that I started today with Beyond for my 7 1/2yr old and she loves it. What a perfect fit. We'll leave the continents taped to the kitchen floor until the toddler rips them up.
I will start Little with my K next year and probably go through 2 yrs for him...whatever he needs. I think it may be one of those things that you can plan for but them have to "go with the flow" or whatever works. I'm a planner by the way and wish I could stop. I'm addicted to it.
How do you have 5 children? I struggle alot with my 4 and we keep tossing back/forth if we should have another someday. We LOVE a big family but it's hard!
Thanks for all your advice ladies!

Glad you decided on two guides. I think, in the end, it will be much easier for you.
