Okay, I need some advice. My daughter is 9, will be 10 in October. She has a relatively short attention span. She also has absence seisures but is under medication for those. While she has made some leaps and bounds this year with reading and writing, math is still a huge struggle. Well, more specifically, learning math facts. She just doesn't have them "down". I'm pulling my hair out. How important is this? I'm using a curriculum where you're not suppose to go on until they are mastered. MUS. Well, we have gone onto Gamma which has multiplication but I can see it's getting confusing for her. She definately knows addition and subtraction with regrouping but struggles with problem solving and of course math facts. Anyone else had this problem and what have you done?? Maybe it just takes more conentrated time with her on my part. It just seemed my other two daughters learning them so "naturally". We do have Flashmaster and have used Mad Minute sheets.
Thanks so much,
Shannon

Re: Math facts/Daughter with short attention span
I don't have advice to solve this, but you aren't alone! My dd is about to turn 9 and still can't get her basic facts down...we're no where near getting them down. Have you tried math facts copywork or having her make her own flashcards with the problem AND answer on one side? I guess it's very CM'y ...she needs to see the complete and correct facts as much as possible. If my 3yo wouldn't pull them down, I'd have DD do this and put them on her wall by "sum groups". All the facts that equal 5 in one spot, all that equal 6 in another, and 7 and so on.

Oh, and I just thought of an idea I might try. Have her regroup them in different ways everyday. Like all the sum groups, then all the +2's here, +3's there...etc. , then maybe the next day do all the 2+, 3+.....etc. She's not having to solve them all everyday, but she is seeing each and every one everyday. Other groups... those with an odd number first in one pile, even number first in another...sum is even, sum is odd....sum is more than 5 here(or 6 or 7 or ....) and less than # is here. You might even have her tell you the subtraction problems for several of them each day.

Re: Math facts/Daughter with short attention span
Hi there!
I feel where you are coming from, we have math difficulties with one of our dds and knowing the math facts has really helped us out. If flashcards aren't working, could you try creating worksheets from MUS website, then slipping them into plastic page protectors and then giving her a wet/dry erase marker to write the answers to? Or I really like the sum groups and could you create a binder with the problems on a nice cardstock, with the problems color coded and flip through them each day?
just a few ideas.
As for problem solving--are you talking word problems and figuring out what to do? That is our biggest struggle. We can do the math work, but when words get involved it gets confusing. For that, I have tried lots of things and I haven't found the 'thing' that makes it click. So it is a continued search--although it is getting better. We've come up with some tricks and basic memorizing of formulas.
I will be praying for you. God can give you the wisdom you need for your daughter!
Blessings,
Jess
