i think this is a great idea

Post by kelli » Tue Mar 16, 2010 10:01 am

i would greatly appreciate your help here. i am currently using beyond with my 7ds for 1st grade. when we start in the fall for 2nd grade we will have 10 weeks left in beyond. i was then thinking of doing bigger with extensions and all that goes with it at half speed for 2nd and 3rd grade. we only do school 4 days a week so i thought this would be a great plan. we will then be ready for prparing in 4th grade. do this sound like a good plan to you? anyone on the same schedule? tried this? thanks for your thoughts.

I did something similiar to this. We began Beyond for 1st grade and made it through unit 22. The beginning of this year I started using something else, but decided after about 8 weeks to switch back to HOD. We picked up where we left off with everything, except we used the second grade spelling list. We had completed Singapore 1A and was half through 1B, so we finished 1B and plan to complete 2A this year. We worked at a slower pace to stretch out the last units for history and science, but went at full speed for everything else. We continue to do singapore, emerging readers, spelling list 2, and storytime daily. I have a Bible story workbook we are doing, and he is reading alot of books about science and history topics from the library. I also have a 2nd grade grammar book we are working on a few days a week. This is how we will finish out this year. I wanted to begin Bigger for 3rd grade as this will put us on track for the rest of the guides. I do not know why your plan would not work, it sounds fine.

Kelli,
I like your plan. I have yet to look closely at the Bigger manual (just came this week), but I too had considered finding a way to stretch it a little bit so that my DD was a little older going into Preparing. So I'll be watching this for more answers.

i feel like adding in dithor and cheerful cursive will also make it challenging for a 2nd grader. we will be switching to singapore math so i will also be going back to singapore 1a and b with the activities as written in the beyond guide. we will do math everyday until i get him caught up with wherever we may be in the guide.

We are doing Bigger half-speed, but not with extensions and love it! Here is a thread where I posted our day:

I think it sounds great! :D We will do Bigger 4 days a week and did it mostly that way last time we did it. There is plenty there to stretch it out. And I will tell you this, Preparing is fine even for 5th grade. I have some doing it now for 5th and it has been great. I'll have one coming through it at 4th as well and I know that will be fine for her. We have loved all HOD programs no matter where we land as long as the initial fit is good there is flexibility after that. your plan sounds great to me. :D
