Advice for next year for 11 yr old

Post by michmcl » Mon Mar 15, 2010 8:56 pm

We are doing PHFHG this year with my ten yr old son. First off let me say I am so blessed with this curriculum. After many years of frustration I have found my son is a right brain learner with some processing issues (visual and auditory). Along with Diane Craft supplements he has made great progress this year and Heart of Dakota curriculum has worked wonderfully for him!
I am not sure what to do for next year- I am not sure if CTC would be a bit much for him and am considering using Bigger Hearts with the extension. Yet I think learning deeper into ancient history would be good for him as well. Any suggestions?

I would go forward with him and not backwards. Preparing "prepares" them for the next manual. If you go backwards, you will see that you are really taking a step BACK in the skills taught, etc because of the natural progression of the manuals. My advice would be to start CTC and go half-speed, if necessary. Bigger can get pretty tough witth he extensions - and I don't mean that in a bad way..just that it is challenging in its own right. People who question whether Bigger is "enough" with extensions for an older kid always get a resounding YES from me! I think Bigger with extensions is meant for a child who NEEDS that extra challenge and craves that extra history/Science. My son, probably like your son, didn't. He was struggling to get his head above water in the basics at that time (he has ADHD and anxiety that causes him issues in school).

Only you can make the best decision for your son, but this is my 2 cents. Hope it helps some.
