Looking for ideas for Spelling

Post by learningathome » Fri Mar 05, 2010 10:20 am

Good morning! I'm looking for a little advice today. My 8 year-old ds is using Bigger right now. We have finished the first level of dictation and he has repeatedly expressed a desire to do "regular spelling". Dictation has not been his favorite thing, though I can see how it has helped him with his writing. We're taking a break from dictation right now, but I will get him going on the next level when we start Preparing.

My son says that he misses doing a spelling lesson, like in the past. Last year he did "A Reason for Spelling" and really enjoyed it. He was so disappointed when I told him would wouldn't be doing it this year. Right now we're working through some 3rd grade word lists, following the format written in the HOD guide. So here's my question...do any of you use an additional Spelling curriculum? If so, what do you (and your child) like?

Thanks!
Heidi

Heidi,

My children and I love All About Spelling. It is thorough, but can be done in 15 - 20 minutes a day. My children have learned so much through this (and I have, too  ), and they look forward to doing it. My 2 older children finished their level before I had a chance to order the next level, and they have missed their spelling time.
But, if he enjoyed A Reason for Spelling, maybe you could just do some more of that. Just a thought! :D

In His love,
RuthAnn

Heidi,

While you can easily use any spelling program you desire, I'll link a couple of threads that will give you some good information to ponder about dictation. Link: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5645&p=41357#p41357

Link: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5645&p=41374#p41374

Both threads are worth thinking about as you ponder your spelling goals for the long haul.:D :D

Blessings,
Carrie
