Basic Math Facts help

Post by Mom2Monkeys » Mon Feb 22, 2010 1:14 pm

DD8 can't get her basic math facts down to save her life. We've already done Singapore 2A and 2B, but she just isn't ready for 3A yet (much due to not being able to solve simple add/subt problems in a reasonable amt of time even though she gets the concepts fine) I backtracked a bit to try to really get the add and subt facts down with her, but it's not happening. At. All. :? She is 8.5 and in 3rd grade, although I'm holding her in 3rd grade again in the fall due to her young age, and the fact we didn't get much of school done these last several months. Should I worry about her not having the facts down? We've done Calculadders and Math Windows and now a whole topical book on learning the facts and the Singapore type concepts behind the facts (completing 10's first, etc.)

She is okay with her times tables after doing Singapore 2 and Timez Attack on the computer for fun. We hadn't found HOD or Singapore math in the earlier years when she should have been learning the facts. I'm at a loss about what to do at this point. This is my sponge child...the one that remembers EVERYTHING she sees and hears and smells....LOL. She can recite many of the poems we are learning in Bigger after a couple days, and all the verses on the first day. But math facts (and telling time!) are not sticking with her. I've considered a type of dyslexia...it's that bad...2+2 can take 10 seconds at times and even subtracting 1 is hard for her!!

Any ideas?

Good afternoon, Tamara! :D When tutoring children in math, I would get out the math flashcards and separate them into groups according to numbers. So first, the dc would only do the zero cards that contained "+ 0". We talked about how "0" is nothing, so the answer is always just the other number. When they thought they were ready for me to time them, they told me (we practiced first though). I gave them 2-3 seconds per card, depending on how I thought they would do. So for 10 cards, I gave either 20 seconds or 30 seconds to complete them (I wanted them to pass - this first time especially!). Then, we did the 1's (all the "+ 1's") separately. We talked about finding the bigger number and thinking what number is next. We practiced. When they were ready, we did 2-3 seconds per card again. Next, we mixed the "0's" and the "1's. I gave a minute to do all of them. After that, the 2's, and we practiced finding the bigger number and counting up. When they passed the 2's, they got mixed in with the 1's, 2's, 3's, and the 4's were practiced separately, and so on. We did this for adding first, and then subtracting. We did this every day, and eventually just pulled out the cards they were missing repeatedly, and those were the only ones they practiced. We continued to move on with their regular math, but did this daily.

I have tried a LOT of math fact memorization programs, and this is the best way I've found for real retention to take place. I think Singapore encourages this already, but this is super easy to add to it if a child needs a boost. I'm actually doing this again myself right now, mainly just because I want my middle ds to go half-speed right now with math. We do Singapore 1 day, and the next day he does his math flashcards. You may want to do something like this, but it's just an idea. I do think if by 3A the addition and subtraction facts are not there, that the flashcards are a good thing to add. I hope something here helps! :D

I'll pull out the flashcards again, Julie. Thanks for the method ideas! I'm at my wits end! I'll continue on with her math while we try to get these down. I was concerned that she needed to learn the facts in connection with the concepts taught by Singapore like 8+5 is 10+3 (completing the 10) and so on...so I've been trying to get that in there to prepare for the bigger concepts that will build on that. Is it okay to move on to just rote memory if she isn't mastering that concept and the others to simplify the mental math? We aren't using Singapore right now (she just really isn't ready for 3A and I have a hard time without the planned activities in the HOD guide!! Love those!) but we are using something that is very similar and very conceptual like Singapore. I'm just scared to move on if she isn't getting something that is an important building block!

Tamara,
We struggled in Singapore 2B with my not so mathy 8 year old in getting down those math facts. We actually took about 6 months off of Singapore 2B and did only math facts work. It worked wonders! We reviewed addition facts every day starting with those that she knew well (up to the +2's and doubles was all) and I was careful not to allow my frustration to show through. It did take time but she has made great progress and doesn't get frustrated with flashcard drill anymore (she is missing maybe 3-5 answers in the set at this point)! The curriculum we came from used Singapore math as well and had scheduled in math fact review days (Monday was Addition, Tuesday was Subtraction, etc.). We have continued to review in this way. This method might help you as well. I might mention that we start with math each morning.

It's wonderful that you were able to troubleshoot what the problem is early on!

We've tried alot of different things, too. What we finally discovered that is working GREAT is the 4 e-books from "Math on the Level" that go from the 9s down. You work on one or two facts at a time, the hardest ones first. We use these for math facts and Singapore as our main curriculum.

We used "Math in a flash" (for dd1) it's a instant recall program developed specifically for LD (dyslexic, disorganized brain) kiddos. It took about 7 min a day and was amazing how well and quickly it worked. It drills instant recall only. How it works is the child hears 5 number families per 2 min session ( 2*3=6 and 3*2=6 are one number family) we did 1 session per 2 week period to make sure she was solid b4 she moved on. They have 5 steps. listen. see, listen and write, see, and test on last sessions material. The flash cards (see) are never tests the answers are always there for the child to see. Not until the child actually knows the material cold do they take a self administered quiz where they keep trying to beat their own time. If they don't know the answer they do not fill it in, and are not penalized. the listen and write the problems are all mixed up on the page and the child needs to find the problem and write the answer. And Mom you don't have to even be involved it set up to be a DIY for the kids after the first couple of sessions.

We did it over the summer and its been months but if you ask her a problem those multiplication facts just pop out of her mouth (like Pavlov's dog drooling at the bell). It is pure instant recall not an understanding of math. It was a super program for us to use. Were using the division right now and she is getting them way faster because she sees the relationship to the multiplication. AND she is so happy!!! no thinking required. she just knows it!

She still can't do any cognitive math so her lower lvl scores are abysmal but the higher lvl tests they give her (where the math problem is written out not shown in pictures) she aces.
PM me if your interested I'll send you the link, its super cheap. :-) tho I think they just changed the name the new program includes add/sub mul/div

I'd do math copywork. I'd have her copy out a set of facts every day. I think flashcards work best IF you show them the card with the answer already on it. For example, instead of flashing 4+4= ____, I'd include the answer, 4+4=8. Some children really need to see the answer for it to print in their minds.

Yes! Donna.
That was so helpful at our house and I almost forgot that math copywork was the initial step in learning the facts for dd. I actually bought Sandi Queen's "Math Facts for Copywork" to save some time.
