History Resources for 1960-present

Post by StillJulie » Fri Feb 19, 2010 4:39 pm

I will have 4-6 weeks after my oldest daughter finishes her current guide (Preparing), but before our school year officially comes to an end this year. My husband would like her to study recent American history. I have never studied it myself and feel at a loss as far as what resources to use. I checked the scope and sequence for HOD, and it looks like that guide isn't written yet. (well, except for Bigger that goes to 1970)

So, does anyone have resources to recommend? Something that would be easy to implement? Maybe even just some good books to read? Maybe even a whole book on Ronald Reagan?

It will be used with my fourth grader. Her reading level is very high, but she is still very "innocent."

The Joy Hakim series was recommended to me, but after reading the reviews on amazon (some said they're inaccurate, biased, and focused on political correctness), I don't think that's what I'm looking for.

Thanks for any help you can give!

well, I don't have an answer but am interested in what others have to say. My 3rd grade son was just yesterday asking me for some books to read about history "that is happening now "(after talking to him I realize he is meaning anything after WWII) and I'm not sure what to let him read. I'm going to search for some biographies but what he would really like to know about is our country's most recent wars (including Korea and Vietnam--yikes!) and the current ones we are involved with, so if anyone has any advice about that I would appreciate that too. My husband is a real history buff so my son knows tid-bits about recent history but we have only "grown-up" books that deal with the topics.

Here are three suggestions

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss? ... en&x=0&y=0

I'm tempted to say go with the Childhood of Famous Americans and just have her pick a few that will give her an overview of the modern time period.

If you want to avoid wars and sensitive stuff then biographical is probably the best way to go.

Some I found...

JFK
Ronald Reagan
Mr. Rogers
Walt Disney
Wilma Rudolph
Teddy Kennedy
Christopher Reeve
Wife of 18 years to Jon.
DragonFly (12yo)
Buttercup (14yo)
