How much time do you spend on each box in BHFHG and LHFHG?

Post by sharonb » Thu Feb 11, 2010 5:29 pm

I'll be using BHFHG and LHFHG in our next school year, and I'm trying to figure out a routine. I know how much time each program is supposed to take total each day, but can anyone share typical times for each box?

I'm using Bigger, but per box, I couldn't tell you time wise. I use CLE for LA and Reading and LA takes longer then R&S Grammar. Even those vary in time from day to day. Carrie states 3-31/2 hours for Bigger. And that is about right. We school from 11-3-3:30 with an hour break.

I'm using Bigger w/DD8, we use R&S 3 for grammar and Math Mammoth for Math (about the same as Singapore though, so should be similar time). I'll list our average times for each box below, just add a cushion of a few minutes in either direction. We do our best to stay on task and do as much as we can at one sitting when we have the chance. We don't rush through, but I try not to lollygag (with 3 youngers, that's just the way it must be for now!). Also, some of the times include teaching time and independent work time for her.

Read About History- 5-10m
Rotating History Activity- 10-15m
Poetry- 5m
Bible- 10m
Music- 5m
Storytime- 15-20m
Math 20-40m (depends on attitudes and if I am doing any facts practice with her)
Lang Arts- R&S3- 10-15m, Cursive practice w/copywork 5-10m, dictation 5m (these aren't always on same day)
Science- 10-30m (depends on if we're just reading/narrating or notebooking/experimenting)
Reading- We aren't doing DITHOR again yet, but when we did, it took about 20m w/ the 2/3 level.

I do her math first, get her started and let her finish while I do phonics with my ds. Then start her on grammar and do something else while she finishes. I start the rest of Bigger with her around 10:30 or 11 and we are usually done by 12 to 1ish...depending on our interruptions for the day. Oh, we also do storytime over lunch, especially if I have our book available as an Audio Cd from our library. I love those peaceful lunches!!

Thanks for the details Tamara!

Based on the fact that my oldest 2 will want to hear what I'm reading in LHFHG to the K'er, and will want to participate in the rhymes and singing, I'm thinking I probably can't be working on both programs at the same time. So, we are going to have to cut down on dawdling and stay on task! Your post reassured me though- each box really doesn't take too terribly long.

Hi sharonb! Here are some past links that list the approximate times per boxes for BHFHG and LHFHG:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4244&p=31219#p31219
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=702

These times were so helpful to me when trying to rough out our schedule - I hope they are to you too! :D Just remember, these are times to shoot for after a month of school or so - they're not reflective of the "training period" for the dc (and me  ) as I've come to think of it. :D

Thanks Julie! I'm thinking we will probably start stagger-start; my upcoming K'er turned 5 in Dec and seems ready for more school. So, I might start LHFHG half-speed with him soon (picking it up to full-speed in a few months), and then start BHFHG with the older 2 in late May when we start our new school year.

Thanks for the links; off to check them out!
