I feel this way also about Euphemisms, especially the ones refering to Deity. I just skipped over "Gosh" when I read aloud Key to the Treasure, we loved the book otherwise. Didn't know about cripes though, but since I didn't like the movie about Dexperaux, I had no interest in reading the book. Good to know for future reference though. Thanks

I don't know. I guess I sit the fence a bit.

My kids don't know cripes means that. They've never heard it associated with Christ. No one I've every known to use the word associates it with Christ so I'm not sure it is a big deal for us.

While the origin of a word doesn't change, it's meaning often does. Take mouse. It used to just be a rodent and now it's a piece of technology. What if it had started out as a bad word? Would it have to remain that forever?

My children don't use much slang at all. Reading a wide range of books hasn't changed that. They didn't start calling each other cheese heads when reading Geronimo Stilton either. :?

Guess it just depends on the family.

I used white-out in Key to the Treasure. The book was a big hit at our house, but I also feel very convicted about this. I am very liberal with white-out in many areas (That is not a comment concerning HOD, rather why we have enjoyed HOD. My white-out bill has definately gone down).

As long as it is not extremely prevelent throughout a book (just a few words here and there), I do go ahead and read it as written, BUT right after I finish the sentence or paragraph I stop and talk to my kids about what was said... "do you think that was a nice word to use? How would it sound to others if we said that kind of word?" My dd is only 5, but she is already reading at a 4th grade level and reads just about anything she can get her hands on. There is just no way I can "protect" her from all the "bad words" out there. I figure the best I can do is let her know that the words are out there and that they sound terrible and are innappropriate. Already when we read things aloud she will stop and say, "that wasn't a very good thing to say." or "That wasn't a nice thing to do. THey should have done.... instead." I know that she will be better at discerning on her own terms when she is reading by herself or when she hears others speak because I have trained her in how what is appropriate and what isn't. :-) THat's just how I handle it anyway.

I don't think any of it is bad at all. To me "geez" comes from gee whiz. As far as cripe, I don't use it. It's an odd sounding word, but I suppose everything has some sort of origin. And gosh! Oh my gosh! What would I do without it? I can't imagine  it has any connotation to God. But then so would "gol darn it", which to me is from "golly". I suppose we all do what's best for our own families.

"Gosh" isn't the Lord's name. That's it, in my book. You have to be careful that you don't put things in the Bible that aren't there. The Bible gives us the name of God, those are the ones we aren't to use in vain. You have to be careful that you don't go down a road of making lots of man's rules that must become God's rules. It steals Christian liberty. As far as the "substitute" words, that has to be a matter of the heart. If it is meant in a way to affront God, then it is wrong. If it is simply an expression of astonishment, than it is okay. That is my opinion of the matter.

My response would be that this thread seems to be getting even more off topic. The intent of the board is to 'discuss' HOD-related topics. I realize book language is a concern, and while Carrie may not mind a discussion about language in books and what is okay, I personally feel it's getting kind of close to becoming 'personal' between people posting on the thread. Just wanted to stick in a reminder of why Carrie created this board and suggest that maybe we should let this topic drop now. :?
