I am trying to decide where to place my 10 year old. She is an avid reader and her skill are good-writing is a littlemore difficult for her.
We had started with preparing at the beginning of Oct. We used it for about 1 week and then quit-tried a bunch of other things. We are back to HOD. I have the CTC program and willnot get Preparing until friday. Anyways, i had started preparing with the intention of using CTC next year with her sister (very advanced 13) but have decided that the 13 year old will move into high school type of work. she has done the ancient at least once and some of the history of that time another time. She has not had anything beyond the civil war so i thought that preparing would be a good fit if i started 1/2 through and finish this school year. I kinda think that CTC would fit her better-her skills as well but then she doesn't get the modern history until highschool. sorry this is long----just need some advice. If i did CTC with her, i would do most of the history readings with her. She loves the Alone bible time--maybe she is readyto be more independent?!
sorry this is so long----any thoughts?
I am also doing Bigger with her brothers, if that matters.

Welcome to the HOD Board, Pam!
We've used the placement chart to place our dc and always found it to be quick and accurate. I would take the history time period out of the decision, and place your 10 yo where she fits best according to the placement chart. Here's a link to that:

If you could describe your dd's writing with the chart in mind, and maybe share a few books she's read lately, as well as your thoughts about her placement according to the placement chart - everyone will surely chime in with ideas. All of this information will help us consider your dd's needs carefully.
We did PHFHG last year and enjoyed it so much! We are doing CTC this year and love that too. So, either program is an excellent option; it just boils down to the one that will fit your dd best. I think it's important to move dc to independence as they get older, as this is part of what makes a curriculum appropriate for a certain age level. You may want to look at both PHFHG's and CTC's week samples (or the guides once you have them both), and pay very close attention to the "I" boxes, as they are meant to be independent. Also, note the "S" boxes, as these are to be semi-independent. Considering whether your dd can really be independent/semi-independent with these boxes will be important for proper placement. Here are those links:

Pam,
I'd love to help you sort through this too.
So, if you get a chance to pop back and answer a few of the questions my3sons asked, then we could help talk through your options better.
Blessings,
Carrie
