DITHOR 2/3 Character Mask Project

Post by Busymomma1 » Fri Nov 13, 2009 9:03 am

Hi all,
Just wanted to share that my dd just finished doing the Character Mask project for the culminating activity for Historical Fiction. She read "Caddie Woodlawn." The mask has turned out so cute, and she is excited to "be" Caddie Woodlawn for her presentation tonight to her dad and me. She really enjoyed the project. These ideas are really enriching her reading experience! Lots of fun!

Just wanted to share that we're having fun with DITHOR! I just might have to take the time to post a picture, if I can figure it out!

Tricia, please do take a picture!! I love seeing what others are doing! :D

We had a lot of fun with this, too. Grant was Duffy last year from Pioneer Cat when he did this project. We actually just got rid of this project that he did last January. It was a BIG piece of poster board to keep around. Here he is...

I'll be looking for Caddie Woodlawn.

Tricia - I'm so glad your dd is enjoying the DITHOR projects! My ds does too, which is a bit surprising to me, since he doesn't have a natural bent toward artistic things. I agree - the projects in DITHOR keep the love of reading flowing. In CTC, we do DITHOR 3 days a week, but we accidentally did it every day for the past few weeks - just not looking at the plans carefully enough I guess. Anyway, when we discovered this, Wyatt said, "Oh that's actually great, because now I get to do my project earlier - oh, I wonder what it will be this time!" I hope you get to take a picture of Caddie, but if you don't, be sure to tell us how it went anyway. :D :D :D

Thanks for sharing the photo, Kathleen! Very cute project! I'll have to take a pic and post!

Julie, I'm surprised my dd likes the projects, too. And actually, I'm surprised that they don't seem like busy work. At first, I thought it would be one of those things that would take up time, and I'd want to rush her through to get onto "more important work." But... the projects really do add to her excitement. She loves to read, but this gives her a creative outlet, too. An added bonus...something I think we can miss in homeschooling... is that this is one of the first times she's had to plan out a project and work with deadlines. That's another life-skill that I don't often think to address, so we address it here. So the projects are worthwhile... definitely NOT busy work! And as we prepare to move on to Fantasy next week, I found myself eagerly looking to select her culminating project! :-) I may have her do BOTH a "fun" one and a character lesson one. We haven't done any of the character lesson projects yet.
Thanks for sharing!

Tricia,

I'm so glad that your daughter enjoyed making her character mask of Caddie Woodlawn. I loved that book so much when I was a child! I still remember it fondly. :D

My boys have thoroughly enjoyed the projects within DITHR too. Even my 8th grader remembers doing his 2nd grade projects! :D

Thanks for sharing!

Blessings,
Carrie

Julie,
LOL about the hair! I look EXACTLY like that in the morning, too, because I'm a redhead! ha! I guess she used me as her model! :-)
