Kind of OT :English Text???
Any ideas on a good English text for an adult? My husband is from Mexico and his English Grammer and Writing is in need of help. He is going back to school to get his degree but has not been able to pass the writing portion of the Compass test even with taking the remediation class at the college because the teacher basically did nothing all semester. I would like to find a text that I could use to help him. I thought about just getting one of the rod and staff texts but I am not sure exactly where to start. Any ideas?

I was going to suggest just getting one of the R & S books too. I wonder about the high school reference edition? I can't think what it's called exactly, but I know R & S has one and I was impressed by how concise it was.

Rod and Staff does have a concise handbook for Writing and Grammar that is very good. Your husband could possibly go through the easier parts of that handbook, reading over a section daily. It also breaks down written assignments into very manageable steps, providing solid guidelines for written work. Although some of the grammar coverage would be far too difficult, much of it would likely work.
Otherwise, for older students or adults who have not had much formal grammar instruction, Rod and Staff 5 is typically the best place to begin.
Blessings,
Carrie
