LHFHG-Do you repeat lessons or move on?

I just start with my 4 1/2 year old. Do you keep moving on to the next lesson, or repeat lessons until they "get it". For example, my DS is having trouble forming numbers correctly. Should I make him keep practicing before moving to the next lesson?

Also, does anyone do the extra activites in the science or history book? Or read the extra pages?

Welcome to the HOD Board! I just keep moving on to the next lesson. The skills cycle back around anyway. I wouldn't redo lessons, but would instead focus on getting the most out of the lesson during the one time you do it (though not dragging it out) and then move on. I think it's really important little ones feel they "can do this", and not everything is meant to be mastered, especially in LHFHG. Many things are introduced, and mastery is not expected for those skills until they are redone in Beyond, or even subsequent guides. My little guy had trouble forming his numbers too, but we just moved on, and now that we're in Beyond he's mastered that and is moving on to other things that are challenging him. HTH!

My ds6 is doing LHFHG this year and loving it. To answer your history questions, we do some of the extra activities in this History book, like the timeline that's suggested to make at the end of one of the beginning chapters. My ds6 LOVES drawing pictures to add to the timeline as we go through the book and he can always look at it on the wall of our school area to see where the event falls in history. I think it's a great idea. However, there was another chapter we finished that I didn't have him do the extra activity. I think it depends on what it is, what our time is like that day/week and my son's interest level in the project. I do have him answer the questions orally at the end of every chapter in the history book, as well as the questions after the Bible story in the Family Time Bible.

For Science, we do the pages that are written (we're using the 1st grade option) so at times it's an experiment and if I have the things on-hand or have looked ahead and prepared, we'll do it. It's all dependent upon you, your time, your child, your preferences. That's the nice thing about HOD!

As far as math concepts, writing numbers is a Kindergarten skill so it is important that he can write them on his own by the end of the year. However, I wouldn't stop the math lessons. I would continue on and maybe have him write a few numbers each day as a review along with the other math activities that are in the guide.

i just started LHFHG with my 4 1/2 yr old daughter. we are only doing the left side and story-time. we don't usually do the extra activities in the books. sometimes, depending on what it is, we might. i did get the coloring book that goes along with the History for Little Pilgrims and she and my almost 6yrold son seem to like it.

For math/ reading we just do those on days she feels like working on it without using the manual. if i were using the math in the book , i would just move on. Like it was said earlier, much of it is introduction and it will come back around and they will just "get it".

My DD, 4 1/2, doesn't know how to write all her numbers properly either and she is tagging along with her brother in Little Hearts. I don't repeat lessons because she is just 4 years old. She gets the counting and the numbers that go with the counting so for me that is fine. In time her writing will improve. My 5 1/2 year old still writes some numerals backwards but so did my oldest until around the age of 7.

We just keep moving along, too. They'll continue to need to write numbers for almost all of the lessons in LHFHG. If my dd has a question about a number, I write it for her somewhere so that she can copy it. She definitely wants to be the one writing it on her page - with NO help! She's my independent little thing! Anyway, they'll get it because they'll keep doing it day after day just with some other thinking added in.

We haven't done any of the extra history activities so far (we're in Unit 2 for that...but are up to unit 7 for math). We're just doing what's in the guide.

I am having so much fun with LHFHG with my little ones! I hope you're enjoying it as much as we are!

I just keep moving, too. If I don't, ds becomes frustrated and uncooperative. Besides, I am finding that he often surprises me with what he can do later on. For example, a lesson may not seem to me to be going well, but a few days later, he will demonstrate the skill or an understanding of the concept we were working on. He loves to keep me guessing!

We've found this as well. Those little ones take in more than we think and begin to bloom when we least expect it. I forgot to answer the other part of your question - we didn't do any extra history activities either. We just did what was in the guide.
