Placement questions about Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory

Post by busymomma » Sat Oct 10, 2009 8:57 pm

Hi Everyone

This is only my third post on HOD, but I have read so many posts about all of you and your families, I feel like I already know all of you. So forgive me if I act like I know everyone. If anyone has read my first post, my oldest daughter has been somewhat the guinea pig in our homeschool. I feel like I am finally starting to figure out how this homeschool thing is supposed to work. It has been hard to find that perfect fit, and I never thought it would take me this long, and I feel pretty foolish about it.

But, anyway, my other daughters are currently in Kindergarten and 2nd grade. It is still early enough for them I don't really feel like I have messed them up at all :D Hopefully, I won't. Isabella, my 7 year old is extremely bright, reads well. She has read many of the ones on the Emerging Reader list, Frog and Toad, Amelia Bedelia. She also read many of the Henry and Mudge books. I would say she is a high 2nd grade reading level. She loves to write stories on her free time, even though she has somewhat inventive spelling techniques. Budoorflies, I thought was quite interesting. She is doing Singapore Math 1B, and doing fine. I was already planning to switch to HOD, he he! She is also doing Climbing to Good English 2, and Amish workbook program similar to Rod and Staff. She is already working on spelling. She writes pretty well for her age, seems to remember how words are spelled once she has studied them. The only issue is her handwriting is sloppy, but she is continually asking to do cursive. It is pretty easy for me to say that she places squarely on Bigger Hearts for His Glory. By the time I actually order, she will probably be ready for Singapore Math 2A.

My youngest daughter is in Kindergarten. She is still learning the letters and their sounds. She is not reading yet, but she may be reading simple words/sentences at the end of the year. I might want to start 1st grade with her doing The Reading Lesson even if it reviews some things she may have learned already. She is writing, but not really well yet. I believe before the year is out, she will do just fine with it. She is working through Bob Jones K for Math, and is doing fine. She has learned to count and write to 20 so far, shapes, patterns and measurement. She will learn telling time, counting money, counting to 100, and simple adding and subtracting before the year is out. I would like to move her over to Singapore Math 1A when she finishes it. I think that will work, but correct me if I am wrong on that. She is also doing some Rod and Staff preschool/Kindergarten books that I ordered from Rainbow Resource. I am pretty confident that she will place in Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory when this school year is done.

So my next question is with Isabella placing in Bigger Hearts and Lydia placing in Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory, can I put them both in Beyond Little Hearts for both of them, substituting the Language and Math lessons from Bigger Hearts for Isabella. I will say that they both work well together and do not mind learning the same topics. I think it would be great if they could be combined for all the guides from Beyond on through till the last guide. Do you think that would work?

Thank you all so much!

Yes I think that might work. :D I have my 5 year old who is on lesson 15 of the Reading Lesson and My 7 year old that is reading fairly well fairly close to yours maybe a little lower but not much. She can read Frog and Toad with no issues type level and reads it sentence by sentence instead of word by word if you know what I mean. Anyway they are doing Beyond and I plan on keeping them together for the long haul. She also is wanting to do cursive. I am almost ready to just let her do it. She needs a little more work on the manuscript but not too much. They will turn 6 and 8 this year about midway. We did LHFHG kind of stretching it out for my youngest to catch up the last year and a half or more and it worked out great they are both thriving in Beyond even though they really are on different levels. my 5 year old is in Singapore 1A and my 7 year old is in Singapore 2A both doing great with that as well. You could certainly use the Bigger manual for LA and Math with Beyond and that would work just fine. Lots of people do similar things, including myself with my older kids.

Yes, I think this is a great idea! :D In fact, as I was getting to the end of your post here, I was getting ready to type this advice exactly - but you beat me to it. I think Beyond would be a great fit for both of them, and doing the right side of Bigger Hearts would fit your older dd just right. We're going through Beyond right now with our middle ds, and it is just a wonderful program. I think your 2 dc would thoroughly enjoy it. I responded to your other post about your older dd too, and I just wanted you to know I did PHFHG and Beyond last school year, and we had a great year. I think you would too! :D

Thank you Julie

I guess I have read so many posts on this board this past few months about placement in various guides as a guest  that I could have just placed my order without ever asking for advice. But I was unsure of myself and thought I would feel better about it if I got some advice from the experts and moms who have made this decision before. I already feel better knowing I have a plan in place for all my children. Now I just need to place my order! But I can't do that just yet. So I will just wait a little bit. I do love to read the posts about all the great stuff we will learn about, though. :D

It sounds like you have a great plan coming together, Toni! :D I'm so glad you've formally introduced yourself, and it will be nice getting to know you here on the board! :D

Yes, she is going to do Preparing Hearts, even though she may be a tiny bit too old for it. I still feel like that would be the best option considering where she places on the chart, and we are new to the Charlotte Mason way of learning. I had whole different post about all the struggles I have had with her. Julie and couple of other ladies kind of walked me through figuring out where she needed to be. I am glad to have that settled, am quite anxious to order!
