Are there online tests I can use? Or something else? Or do I just see which reader level they can comfortably read aloud?
Thanks for your help!

Leanne here is a link for you with an assessment tool.
http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/articles/060899.htm I just opened up samples of books that I knew the reading level on and had them read it aloud and kept going until they had some issues. I went with the level that challenged them but did not blow them out of the water. This test looks a little more scientific than my way.

Ok I used this test on my kids. It seems to land them on about what they are reading. I think it is a close guess. My dd that just came out of The Reading Lesson tested 2.8 And we have her in emerging readers in the Early Reader's Bible (2.0) and she can read that with ease. I gave her the Christian Liberty Nature Reader 1 (3.0) and she can read that too but it is not as fluent for her but still fairly well. She tested 2.8 so that makes sense. She has done a lot of reading on her own. I have a lot of early reader books and she has devoured those. My other kids tested as I would expect for what I know of their reading levels. Except for one tested higher than expected and that is my dd with special needs praise God. I expected her to barely test 3rd and she tested 4th. However I know for her reading fluently and now glossing over words she knows for other words is an issue. But still I am praising God. My other kids tested about where they would be a year later after testing last year. So I think it is good get an idea test. HTH!
