Okay, this is what we did.
Characters Setting Problem
1.Oliver Twist 1. haunted mansion 1. need to save $ from enemies
2.Lil' Orphan Annie 2. log cabin in the woods 2. too little food
3. Laura Ingalls 3. apartment in the city 3. lost a hat
4. Almanzo Wilder 4. small village in Norway 4. bad friends
5. Curious George 5. slums of London 5. need to find parents
6. Peter Lundstrom 6. orphanage in NYC 6. need to escape from villian

Once we set this up (and if I had looked ahead, I could have done it the night before

), we rolled the die for characters, then settings, and then problems. For one of them we kept rolling everything except the right answer, so we started checking off the ones that did not apply, until all were checked off except for the right one. For us the combination would have been 641, but it depends on which book you are reading and how you set up your "Game".
I will tell you that my kids really enjoyed this. They kept playing with it for off and on for the rest of the day - rolling the die and coming up with interesting scenarios.
