LHFHG Science Question
LHFHG Science Question
I am using the Our Father's World science with the schedule from the back of LHFHG. What do others do when there is nothing scheduled from the book in the back. For example, on Unit 6, Day 1 the activity is to make an edible model of soil layers. It says to name and describe each layer. We skipped it, but I am curious what others do. Thanks!
Re: LHFHG Science Question
My understanding was that you do the same activity, just read the page from OFW about the same topic. Hopefully someone else will chime in...

Re: LHFHG Science Question
I actually do both the activities written in the manual AND the activities given in the 1st grade book. My son LOVES science and thinks this is the greatest thing ever. I am sure you can skip what is in the book with no problems, though. It is really up to the parent. If I had to skip one, I would definitely skip the book and do what carrie has written in the manual.

Re: LHFHG Science Question
Ditto to what Rebecca said.
I've not added in the activities in the actual science book (and Carrie has edible activities planned in later anyway
), but if you finish the HOD science plans and have the desire to do more, the science book activities can easily be added.

Re: LHFHG Science Question
Ok I did the same thing as what Rebecca and Julie did and we read both books (the K and the first) becasue we loved it and had them both. And if I did not pick up both science books boy I heard it from my little ones.
And if I skipped anything I heard about it. My two little ones are do it all girls.

Re: LHFHG Science Question
Maybe I didn't ask my question clearly. I will try to clarify. The other day, there was no page to read out of My Father's World, but the activity from the K book was to make lays of soil with various food items and label them. What would others do in this case (get info online, read a book about soil?). I don't know about the soil layers to do the activity without a corresponding reading from the book. Thanks in advance.

Re: LHFHG Science Question
Hmm I get you now and I am not sure because I had both books. I think I might ask Carrie on that one. She surely knows about that and perhaps has balanced it out in the long run or just wants you to read what is there. But I am not sure just I guess saying that I had misunderstood your initial question.
Sorry about that.

Re: LHFHG Science Question
Mattilda,
On Unit 6-Day 1 the soil layers used in this activity are given within the directions of the "Science Dicovery" box. So, the bottom layer is noted in the plans as the "rocky bottom layer", the next layer is noted as the rich "topsoil layer", and the next layer is noted as the thin "humus layer (composed of decaying plants, leaves, and twigs)". These are the same layer names used by those reading the 'K' science text as neither the 'K' text nor the grade 1 text uses specific names for the layers of soil. It is just done as given within the activity itself.
Hope that helps!
Blessings,
Carrie

Re: LHFHG Science Question
We've found the activities often offer additional learning. I look at the activities as learning within themselves. They link to the theme being studied but allow another avenue of learning rather than just always limiting learning to what was already read in the textbook. So, while there may be some days with no reading from the textbook, but with science experiments/activities instead, I always thought of that as enrichment. It actually seemed more like a scientist would go about learning anyway
- so I'd just enjoy the activities - they're fun and academic to boot!
