New to BLHFHG; History question

We just began our first year of using HOD. We are in our second week with Beyond. My daughter and I enjoy it more than anything we've used in the past. Here's my only question though. I am wondering why pages are skipped in the history reader. It makes no sense to me to read just two non-sequential pages in the book and then to discuss things that haven't even happened yet (like "The Storm"). I find myself changing the lessons so that I am reading the book sequentially to my dd. I imagine Carrie must have a good reason for it; but I think i've missed it. I'd love to understand so that we can simply follow what Carrie has written instead of making changes to the manual already. I appreciate any input ya'll can give me!

I'm assuming you mean in Pioneers and Patriots? How you'll do the intro page and then the page at the end that tells the steps to something?

I don't know if this is the reason or not, but for my dd it really helps her pay attention and understand the other stories if she knows a general overview, and she listens for the steps layed out on the last page in the rest of the stories.

It's early and I had a poor nights sleep so forgive me if I am not understanding your question correctly. I am currently in Beyond as well, just finishing our second unit today actually. By skipping pages in the history reader, do you mean how Carrie's manual will schedule (like on unit 1 day 1) to read Pioneers and Patriots p. 2 & 12, and then the next day you read p. 3-5? If it is I think that is because 1.) the into on p.2 and the recap of how people lived on p. 12 are both short readings (just 1 page each), 2.) so that the 3 chapters per unit do not need to be broken up and 3.) so that it will give the child an overview of what is about to be read for that weeks unit.

We have used the history readings as written by Carrie and nothing has felt awkard at all. The only problem my daughter has with the readings is that we only read 1 chapter per day.....she wants to find out what is going to happen next right away!!!

By "The Storm" you mean the poetry reading right? I believe even reading the poem before reading of Pedro and Catalina's storm on the ship, helps with making the storm feel more vivid.

I would have to agree with the previous posters. This is only an issue when you are using American Pioneers and Patriots. The other history books don't have you skipping around.

The key idea shows how the theme for each day ties together. We've done Beyond twice now and found the flow to be very enjoyable. I wouldn't try to change the pages being read as they are all tied to the day's overall flow, including the activities and discussions. You'd lose the beauty and simplicity of the plans in the guide otherwise. I am a go through the book from cover to cover in order kind of person usually too, but all I can say is the order makes sense the way it is written in the HOD plans. I liked how it was set up!

It skips around so that all the books tie in together. You have to look at the overall picture and not the snippets.

thanks! i understand a bit better now. It makes sense that Carrie's intention is to give an overview of what is to come. I will emphasize that with my daughter. I don't know why i'm having such a hard time adjusting to the way Carrie has written the lesson plans. Even this morning, when we were reading Chapter 2, which was still about the storm, Carrie has us talking about Sally and her mother, which doesn't happen until Chapter 3. For whatever reason, my mind just doesn't grasp the logic. I'll get it eventually though, especially if i start placing the emphasis on the fact that we are seeing what is to come later.

My dd and I do really enjoy the curriculum so far. Once i get over this hump, i'm sure we'll enjoy it even more. I am also using DITHOR 4/5 with our older son. We love this too! I have a friend who has been telling me for the past couple years that she thought HOD would be a great fit for me and our kids; but I ignored her. Now I'm finding it to be a great fit for our dd. Although i already chose other curriculum for our son (mainly b/c we wanted to do TN history instead of world history this year), I am seriously considering using CTC for him next year. The thought of being close to choosing next year's curriculum already just thrills me! We've been homeschooling for 3 years now and this is the first year that actually seems good.

Do you have a different printing of Pioneers and Patriots? Mine is a 2005 printing and the page numbers line up exactly with what the guide says is happening with Sally and her mother. It sounds like something isn't matching up.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Did you get the version HOD carries? If not, the pages could very well be off.

I have the 1995 printing. I didn't realize there would be a difference. Perhaps this is the problem. I'll check into it more. Thanks for the suggestion, Ladies!

I just went to Christianbook.com and saw the contents page of APP, second printing. The chapter titles are generally the same; but the page numbers are completely different. I will either have to make my own adjustments or buy the newer printing. Glad to see I'm not losing my mind though! LOL! Thanks so much for helping me figure it out!
