I see that we'll need clay for making some sort of map this week.
Just wondering if anyone who's done this would recommend one of the four recipes from this link:

Or if there's another recipe that you use, please share!

Re: Clay for Preparing, Week 4...
We just worked on Unit 4 this past week! I bought regular, generic clay at the beginning of the year, but we couldn't get it to work for the map. It was just too hard. We had some homemade playdough that dd used for her map, and it seems to have worked fine. We will finish the unit tomorrow, so we'll see how the playdough works out. When I made the playdough several months ago for Sunday school, I used whole wheat flour instead of enriched white flour, and it gave the playdough a great grainy texture. I used red and yellow (I think) food coloring, so the clay actually looks like red soil! I posted pictures of dd's map on our blog. Check us out:

How sweet of you to answer! It was from looking at your blog that I realized I needed to come up with a plan. I don't make it to the store very often (six young kids), and I don't have any clay on hand, so I started googling recipes in order to be prepared.

Re: Clay for Preparing, Week 4...
As a ps teacher, every year I'd have my students make relief maps. I made a salt dough for them to use, and it always worked great. It does take a while to dry if you want to save the creation.
Salt dough recipe
1 c. salt
1 c. flour
1/2 c. water
Combine everything in a large bowl and mix well. Add a touch of water or flour depending on its consistency. If you want the texture to be smoother, add a little more flour and a little less salt. If want the grainy texture, follow recipe as written or add a little more salt than flour. If you want colored dough, add the food coloring to the water first. Then add it to the dry ingredients.
Hope that helps.

StillJulie,
There's also a few air-dry clay recipes within the other Project Boxes (if you get a chance to peek ahead) in the Preparing Heart's guide that may work too.
Blessings,
Carrie
