We are doing PHFHG this year and are finishing up our first unit. We are also doing written narration for the firs time this year. I was shocked today to when I worked through the written narration with my youngest. We worked together just as the Guide directed and he did a great job. I, of course, wrote what he said out on the white board and he just copied what I wrote which was what he had told me. However, my older 2 boys were directed to do their own written narration and bring it back to me. Both boys did great in the actual narration. Then I went ahead and worked with them in correcting spelling and grammar. Should have I? I been told that when it comes to narration that when focusing on the mechanics of their paragraphs vs. simply narrating that I will discourage them in the narrating????? Might I add that they are horrible spellers. Help please.

I know CM advocated delaying any correction of a written narration until later years, however the teacher in me has a tough time with the habits that are being formed within that time. So, I do go through the editing steps listed in the Appendix (of both Preparing Hearts and CTC) with my oldest son when he writes his written narrations for the extension pack assignments.
I do follow the steps of having him read his narration aloud to me, and then we edit the narration from number 1 up through whatever skill on the editing list is new to him. I underline in pencil any needed changes and use proofreader's marks to mark them. Then, he fixes his narration. It's important NOT to require all the skills on the checklist from the beginning, but to start where your child is and add a new skill each time a previous one is mastered (as explained in the editing checklist directions).

This very well may be written somewhere in the Guide too, but how often would you suggest an older child using extensions to do written narration on that extension reading?

Just wanted to say I was so excited about the narration directions in the guides especially in CTC and Preparing for the written narration because I was clueless. I also loved that there were directions right to the student.
I took those student notes on narration and copied and laminated it to have in our school room. That way they can all look at it as needed in case another child is in the actual Teacher manual. I probably will make a copy of the teacher part too so I have it in another place just in case they have the book as well. Those directions were so well done. What a blessing!

Great reminder! I was thinking of doing this especially for my older 2 as they do a lot more independently AND then real life too over again.
