Made a decision regarding Beyond and my almost 6 year old.

Post by Tree House Academy » Thu Aug 27, 2009 3:47 pm

I ordered Little Hearts today - along with the two History Books and the Science book for 1st grade. We will do the right side of Beyond and the left side of Little Hearts. This way, we don't have to give up the spelling words or the read alouds that we love...but we can take it slower on History, Science, and Bible studies. I hope I am making the right decision. This means we will always be kind of backwards in the manuals - using one side of one manual and the other side of the other, but oh well. Maybe ds will slow down in the basics at some point and we will sqaure up.

Anyone else do this? Have any insight?

I use different parts of different manuals for my kids and it really has not been a big deal. I know it seems like it would be before you do it but the guides are really set up to allow this to work very smoothly. You will still get a program that flows even if you need to for a while use a separate manual for LA and Math. I do think eventually you will even out as well. When you actually do it and get a flow you will see it is not a huge deal to go between two guides. :D Praying for peace for you. I worry ahead too so I know how that is. Don't worry HOD has you covered. You will see. :D

Rebecca,

I think you'll know better once you get the guide and materials in hand. Then, if LHFHG seems like it isn't the right fit, you have a great back-up plan with owning Beyond already. So, either way you are set for a great year. I really don't think you can go wrong. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks Carrie! It is good to know I can always just go back to beyond. My son is hard to place because he is definitely advanced in the basics, but he has not had much history or science and we have never studied Bible this way before. He will not be 6 until September and I felt like a lot of the left side pages were over his head. Like you said, when I have the materials in my hand, I should be able to better guage where he is and if it is the right fit. Hopefully they will get here early next week. I hate to go too long without the good stuff (Bible mostly)!

Rebecca,
I think you'll definitely know when you begin LHFHG. I can see how you didn't want to miss doing it. The one year sweep of history and more gentle history/science readings were a nice precursor for Beyond. I don't think it's strange at all to be on the path to do the left side of one guide and the right of another. Eventually, they sort of meet up with all of the LA/math options offered in Bigger Hearts (and for sure PHFHG) on up, so at that point you may just be in one guide anyway. :D Knowing you can always just go back to doing Beyond is a nice Plan B. I think you are wise to try LHFHG, rather than be doing Beyond all year wondering if LHFHG would have been a better fit for the left page side.
