Ds is just starting lesson 4 of The Reading Lesson and it seems like every day since the beginning of lesson 3 he complains about doing it. We only do one maybe two pages a day he can do it and does fairly well when he does but getting him to do it is like pulling teeth. For example, this morning it went like this,
Me:"okay R its time to do reading"
R: I'm tiiiiiiiired.
Me: We need to do your reading early so you can go play.
R: I caaannt, I'm tiiiiiiired.
Me: Okay then you can nap on the sofa until your ready.
After which he laid on the sofa and wiggled for a while, then tried to get up. I sent him back and this took about 45min before he said he was ready to do reading. Even when he says he is ready he doesn't start right away he wiggles and whines a little more. This has been happening everyday for like a month and it is getting old. Help please. He was so excited in the beginning and now I don't know what to do.
Reading question?
Re: Reading question?
I understand. My ds is on lesson 6 and I've encountered the same thing now and then, particularly on Monday if we had Fri-Sat-Sun off of "school". Dh and I are looking at these early years (K+) as more important for training first-time obedience than any particular academic skills. We dropped back to one page a day, and we do it in the same part of the schedule every day. If he complains/whines/argues, there is a consequence (each time
,) and we take time out for it. It only took a few days of that for ds to see that I was serious, and that the reading is actually not hard, and his resistance decreased dramatically. Still happens now and then, but he changes his attitude much more quickly now (usually
) It can be frustrating. Go to the Lord in prayer and see what he has for your family's priorities...HTH

Re: Reading question?
Kristen gave wonderful advice that I agree with wholeheartedly. The combination of dropping back to a page a day along with training in first time obedience is a wonderful combination.
You may also wish to move the reading session to a time when he is less likely to say that he is tired. Perhaps he isn't a morning person and would do better right after lunch? Whenever you do end up scheduling it, just keep the lesson short and sweet and try to consistently keep it at a similar time each day so your child knows what to expect.
Another thing to do is to set a portable timer for 5-10 min. and put it near you as you do the lesson. Tell the child that as long as he works hard the entire time, when the timer rings he's done. If he doesn't work hard, then add 5 more minutes.
Blessings,
Carrie
