What a great first day!

Post by LynnH » Tue Aug 25, 2009 11:46 am

We started Preparing today and it was great. My ds has been so excited about homeschooling. I woke up at 6:30 to find him standing at the top of our stairs. I asked him what he was doing and his reply was, "Waiting at the bus stop". That cracked me up. He loved that he could stay in his pajamas. He was ready to start school by 7 am. I wasn't quite ready, but we started anyway. He didn't complain about anything. I was a little worried about how he would do with writing out the bible verse in cursive for his Science today because writing is so difficult for him. I did make some adaptations for him. I wrote it in cursive on the white board so he could model it and I let him used lined paper and didn't make him write on unlined. We just then cut it out and pasted it above his drawing of the arctic tundra. He then typed out the sentence from the One Small Square Book that he was supposed to put under the picture and we just cut and taped that also. I am letting him type out his studied dictation (I turn off all spell and grammar checks). This way his CP doesn't get in the way at all. He can really focus on capitalization and spelling and not worry about making his hands do what he wants them to. He finished by 12:30 and that was with taking a lunch break and watching a half hour video. He said to me "this didn't seem like school at all, everything was so much fun". For a kid that was always so exhausted when he came home from ps this was just so exciting for me.

Lynn,

I'm just popping-in to celebrate your great first day! Hurray! :D It sounds like your son did very well, and I know having the first day out of the way goes a long way towards calming a mother's heart too!

Thanks for sharing. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Thanks Carrie! We had a wonderful second day also. He did the Poetry writing assignment today and really enjoyed it. He typed out his completed poem and even used a fancy font and he can't wait to show his dad. Typing out his vocabulary on the index cards also went great. I had to laugh because he did the word traitor. We have been watching the Liberty's Kids series at night as a family just to get a little American History in since he didn't get much in ps. When he drew his picture for traitor he drew a picture of Benedict Arnold holding a British Flag. I thought that was pretty clever. We are having some really good discussion during our bible and storytime also.

The bus stop thing cracked me up :D What a funny kiddo!

I am very encouraged by these sort of posts and I am hoping that when I am finally able to order this (praying for funds to come quickly) and start my children will learn to love learning again!

Lynn,

Your son's picture for vocabulary really was clever! I love those moments when you can tell that they really "got" a concept. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
