Index card size for Bigger vocab

Post by faroutback » Sat Aug 22, 2009 9:59 pm

I was wondering with all the information that is to be placed on the index cards for the vocabulary words in Bigger, are these the 3x5 cards or the 4x6? I'm concerned that ds, whose writing is still in the "big" stage will feel stressed about getting all the info on the 3x5 cards.

I think I did the 4 x 6, if I remember right. :D Someone on the board suggested drawing the picture on one side and writing the words on the other side. I think that's a great idea for little ones still writing in large letters. For one of my dc, I drew lines very far apart with a ruler on a blank card to begin with, and gradually made the space between the lines smaller. This helped him slowly shrink his writing. The method of doing vocabulary taught in Bigger Hearts (and also in PHFHG) has done so much to increase my ds's vocabulary, and it also has taught him how to figure out the meaning of words he doesn't know - an essential skill for mature readers. It's a skill that takes the whole year to perfect though, so patience is an excellent virtue for this skill (not a virtue I easily possess  ). Have fun watching your ds grow in his vocabulary skills! :) :) :)
