I need some help! Out of state family emergency.

Post by AboveRubiesMama » Fri Aug 21, 2009 4:12 pm

We came out of state to visit some relatives. My grandmother had to have emergency surgery and is now taken a turn for the worse, so we may be out here for another week, in case she passes away.

I didn't bring my manuals with me, but I did write down the week's assignments for math, bible, and history for BLHFHG and LHFHG. We were supposed to go home Sunday but it looks as though we'll be here longer since if she does pass away, there'll be a funeral this week. (We live 10 hours away).

We're finishing up week 4. WWYD? Just double up when we get home? Or try to keep going while we're here? If we keep going, should we just continue doing one page or chapter a day?

We're going into week 5, if anyone wants to send any page assignments or something, that would be great. But for BLHFHG, I only brought the Singapore Math 1B (we're somewhere on week 18 for that one, I think. We just finished Lesson 19) and Stories of Little Pilgrims, as well as her Bible (Early Readers Bible) and Biography book. She's supposed to start the next book this week, but I don't have it with me.

As for LHFHG, we only brought his Singapore Math, Do it Carefully, A Reason for Handwriting, and The Adventures of Reddy Fox.

I know with everything happening, I probably should just put school aside, but it gave us all a great sense of familiarity and routine this afternoon when we all sat down and worked. We should definitely be home after this week. We just need to know what's going to happen with my grandmother.

I am so sorry you are having to go through all of this. I went through something similar with my grandmother, but it was before children. After much prayer, my grandmother recovered, not to her pre-stroke state, but we were able to spend another 8 years with her. Then after my dd was born, we went to see my grandfather, and as soon as I returned home, he passed away. So I turned right around and went back. And, I too, live far away, about 14 hours.

If it were me, I would try to keep to the school schedule as much as you can. For all of the turmoil, they may appreciate the consistency of their school time. It will also help you to take your mind off the turmoil as well. I found that doubling up in LHFHG was too much for my dd.

Praying for you and your family....
Blessings,

Cindi

I'm so sorry to hear about the turmoil in your family, I pray your grandmother recovers and you have more time with her. All my grandparents have passed away, I really miss them, and wish I had had more time with them.

That being said, do whatever you feel comfortable with and unless you have a deadlines that you have to meet for state requirements, I wouldn't worry about your schedule too much. Keeping to a schedule certainly can help in times of upheaval, but I would be ready to set it aside, guilt-free, if need be. Is there a library nearby that you could borrow an adventure story for your dd storytime? If you need specific assignments, I have both manuals and would be happy to send you the information you need. Just send me a PM. God Bless.

Personally, I would not try to worry about school and I would spend the last days I could with my grandmother. This is in hindsight of NOT spending the last days with my own grandmother. School will be there when you get home. This is just me, though.

I would LOVE to do this! I have a similar experience with my grandfather and have so many regrets. But she's been moved back into the ICU and I'm not allowed in there. I got to see her for 2 minutes yesterday before the nurse told me I needed to leave so my children wouldn't get sick. The nurse said that what she has "will take the children down very quickly."

At the moment I feel as though I'm holding down the fort. Our parents and aunt are at the hospital most of the day--they're the only ones allowed in and can see her in 20 minute increments at specific times throughout the day. So I'm back here fixing the meals and trying to keep things kept up.

Sorry you are going through this! All of my grandparents have passed, and we miss them very much.

I would do what you could and then make up slowly what you missed when you get home. Read an extra page or 2 a day in history, etc.

Here is the week from Beyond with what you have:

Bible Study: Psalm 139:1-4 (may be a good time to tie in with Grandmother's life)
Spelling: List 1-up, us, bus, cut, but, fun, run, rub, of, from
List 2-club, jump, must, shut, much, upon, just, lunch, some, full
Math: Primary Mathematics Workbook 1A Pg 40-47
Poem: Song for A Little House
I'm glad our house is a little house,
Not too tall nor too wide.
I'm glad the hovering butterflies
Feel free to come inside.
Our little house is a friendly house.
It is not shy or vain.
It gossips with the talking trees,
And makes friends with the rain.

And quick leaves cast a shimmer of green
Against our whited walls.
And in the phlox, the dutious bees
Are paying duty calls.

Did that get everything?? If not, or you have any questions, you can PM me.

Thanks for the help everyone! I appreciate it. I wish I'd just brought everything with me. I wasn't planning on being out here beyond today.
