What EXACTLY is teaching "half-speed"?

Post by JoyousBlessings » Wed Aug 05, 2009 9:02 am

Hello everyone,

I think I am understanding alright, but I want to make sure. Please fill me in on teaching "half-speed". I am beginning our school year next Monday, August 10th. This is my first year every teaching school. My son is five years old today and so we are doing Kindergarten with LHFHG.

I was thinking about doing the first two weeks at half-speed, then moving to full speed teaching. Am I correct in thinking that by teaching half speed that I do one half (say the left side) one day, and then the other half (or the right side) the next?

Would it be a good idea to start out the first couple of weeks half speed and then move to full speed? Thanks so much for your input and any suggestions. Have a wonderful day!

: )))

I think there are probably multiple ways of doing half-speed.

I'm doing Bigger half speed for at least the first 2 weeks of school.

I'm not breaking it up by left side, right side but rather more by subjects. I want a balance of skills (handwriting, math). So our half day is looking more like this (again, this is Bigger)

Day 1

Bible Study (start copying the memory verse - 2 lines)
Hymn Trck 1
Singapore Math (game & p.7)
Emergent Reader
R&S English p. 10-11
History p. 1-3
Geography
Handwriting review of letters (my addition)

Day 2

Poetry (copy first 2 lines)
Review Bible verse
Singapore p. 8 (Calculadder drill)
Emergent Reader
Spelling words
Science p. 6-7 (narration)
Storytime
Handwriting review of letters

Hope that gives you some idea.
Wife of 18 years to Jon.

Buttercup (14yo)

Hi JoyousBlessings!

You are correct is what "half speed" means... left side one day, right side next. You can definitely do this for a little bit and ease into the program, and then start at full speed when you feel that your ds is ready to do more. :D You will enjoy every minute of LHFHG!! I used it last year and will use it again in a couple of years.:)

Have a fun first week!!!!

Joyous Blessings,

There are so many options for doing a guide at half-speed that you will likely get a different answer from each person that you ask! :D Since you mentioned easing into LHFHG, it is easy to go half-speed by doing the left side of the daily plans one day and the right side the next (thus stretching one day over two days). We've done it that way ourselves!

Then, once you hit your stride, you can just bump up to full speed. Enjoy!

Blessings,
Carrie
