Picture book recommendations for k/1st grader
HI all,
I have decided to place my 6 year old in Beyond with her siblings. However, I am concerned that she is not going to enjoy the readings very much because she still really likes to have picture books read to her. I am trying to figure out how to incorporate some into her schooling.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks so much for sharing!

check out before five in a row's booklist, anything by robert mcclosky or beatrix potter, Dr Seuss and we like the madeline books. sonlight has a good booklist, but some titles tend to be a little too old for the age range listed i think.
Wife to my wonderful husband for 8 years
dd5 - LHFHG, Abeka phonics, Horizons math
dd3 - LHTH
dd1 - bringing me Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? and sitting in my lap

I agree with the listed above authors!
I'll add Jan Brett (lovely illustrations)
Jane Hissey (Little Bears Trousers and etc..)
Ruth Heller great intro to parts of speech "Cache of Jewels" (plural nouns) "Up Up and Away" (adverbs)
Then a single book I have enjoyed as an intro to art. Micawber by John Lithgow. Also has wonderful iambic pentameter throughout the book.
one of my kids favorites is "A Hole is to dig"

Re: Picture book recommendations for k/1st grader
You may want to try the supplemental titles listed in the Beyond Appendix. They are meant to be used if you want more titles for your child to read alongside the Emerging Reader's Set, but we just used them for fun since we felt the ERS was enough for that purpose. If you wanted longer books, you could use the Level 2/3 book title ideas listed in the DITHOR Sample Book Ideas list.
We started Beyond half-speed when my ds was 5 1/2, and he grew into enjoying books without pictures pretty quickly. I think the trick is that HOD keeps the readings short, and these bite-sized amounts hold the dc's attention and help them grow into listening to books with fewer/no pictures.

Actually, check out the history book used in Little. It is darling!
301A - LHFHG - History for Little Pilgrims
$10.50
LHFHG - History for Little Pilgrims is part of the history used with Little Hearts for His Glory.
It has some cute pictues and a great timeline. I am so impressed with this book that I am getting it even though my kiddos will be doing Beyond and Bigger. Good luck!

We love a lot of the books and authors already mentioned. A couple of resources I'm finding useful are Honey for a Child's Heart and Books Children Love.

Carrie used both of these books to make the DITHOR Sample Book Ideas list, so great minds think alike, creekmama!creekmama wrote:We love a lot of the books and authors already mentioned. A couple of resources I'm finding useful are Honey for a Child's Heart and Books Children Love.
