Workbox Users... How do I make it all fit!???

Post by butterfly113 » Tue Jul 21, 2009 1:46 pm

We will be using Preparing next year, and I am incorporating the workbox system, tweaked for us. ;0)

I am having a hard time deciding 'how much' should actually go in each box... For example... with only using 10 boxes I will definitely need to combine some areas.

Here are some of our daily subjects.

Bible/Character/Handwriting

Math/Logic

AAS/Dictation

R&S English
\
Poetry \
/ Should I combine any of these in workbox 'units' of work??? :-?
DITHOR /

Typing

HOD Read Aloud History

HOD Storytime

HOD Research, Vocab, Geog or Timeline

HOD History Project

HOD Indp. Hist/Extensions

HOD Science

As you can see, there are more than 10... ugh! Where are you combining? All thoughts welcomed!

Yes, they are mostly from the HOD Manual, including Math and English and spelling (dictation). The ones I have that are additional are typing. So I am trying to decide if I should combine english and dictation in one box, etc...

I have my magazine file boxes organized according to our schedule. For example, my dd will do some independent work for our first 30 to 45 min of the day in cursive, Rod & Staff, Copywork(if any), and dictation. I will put the previous subjects in one magazine file that she can remove from our shelf and place the magazine file back when she is done. We only have four magazine files for each student. My Bigger student may take on file from my LHFHG student.

I made my boxes based on the 10 boxes in the HOD TM. That means all my language arts are together in one box. They just won't take the number off until they are done with it.

The "extras" not assigned in HOD are for 5th day and will fit in the boxes on that day.

So the only thing I can think of is....

1. buy more boxes.
2. double up.

I agree with what Daisy said..either buy a few more boxes to stick in extras, or double up according to how the extras are added in. Another idea is to add the extras to your schedule strip without putting them into boxes. So for typing, you would have a little square velcro'd onto your schedule strip in between whatever boxes you want (like do boxes 1, 2, then typing, then 3, 4 etc) and have an extra little envelope attached to where ever your workboxes are for the "extras". I am doing something similar and will post on my blog once I am done getting everything cut out and laminated :D

I LOVE how these workboxes and HOD's boxes and making my life sooooo much easier!! WOOT! I even found a little planner with boxes to plan the workboxes...LOL!

I do have a few extra boxes that are a little larger. I got those for art and project supplies workboxes. I am thinking I will use those also, and combine more of the language arts, as I had thought of going according to the HOD manual 'boxes' in the first place. This helps alot ladies! I also like the idea of the typing card, but not a box for it!, just on the workbox card schedule. It's coming together! Thanks for your ideas and input! ;0)

The LA assignments take up a good portion of our day. If it were me, I would definitely separate them, or dd would feel like that box took too long and start to dread it. They are also all so different. If you had to combine something, maybe the Independent History Project and the "art" box (can't remember the name)? They are both craft-type activities usually. At least during the Draw and Write Through History part of the year.
