2 Questions about starting LHTH?

Post by Cadam » Wed Jul 22, 2009 3:41 pm

 I am making up weekly supply lists for LHTH. I am up to unit 22 but if someone has lists made already I would gladly quit reinventing the wheel.

 There are photocopies needed for LHTH and they are unfortunately spread throughout the guide. I am planning to have the binding cut off and spiral bound so that I can make the copies and not wreck my guide. How does everyone else go about making the copies? Am I making this more difficult than necessary? I cut bindings off a lot of things btw.

Since this is my first post I will introduce myself. I am sure I know some of you from other places in the online world. I am Christina. I have a 12 yo son who has been homeschooled since second grade, an 8 yo daughter who will go to ps for the first time in the Fall and a 3 yo daughter (the one using LHTH). I also teach an extra student. J is 11 yo and will return to ps Fall 2010. I live in Oregon and it is pretty hot here today. :D

Welcome! Re: photocopies, HOD uses a special binding so that it will lay flat and not break with repeated use. I know that they pay more for this binding so we don't have to worry about it. I personally use a desktop copier/printer and it's hard to copy such a large book, so I did end up spiral-binding LHTH, but only because of our office set-up. I've been told there's no copying in later guides, anyhow. HTH! :D

Thanks Kristen, I have heard that there is no photocopying in later guides but I won't be using those. HOD is just for my little one and only for this year. I will just do the spiral binding. That will be the easiest.

Hello!! We will be using LHTH this year as well! :D :D
Since I have a baby due right at the beginning of the school year- I decided to do all of my copying & preperations, etc. ahead of time. I did not cut the binding off, & it was very easy to copy on our little all-in-one photo copier. It went really fast... maybe about 45 minutes to do the copying for the whole year for all three of my girls. :D And the manual still looks brand new :!: :!:
Since LHTH is so open-and-go, I have not made a list of supplies, but I don't think I will need one... the supplies are really things I have around the house or can easily substitute for something else. :D Hope this helps! I look forward to a fun year of using LHTH with you!

I guess I am really surprised that there isn't a supply list out there somewhere. I know many of the items are typical household things but in the first unit I found 5 things that I don't typically keep around. I don't get catalogues, don't have masking tape and we don't eat cereal. These things figure into LHTH in a major way. :D

Besides that, even if I have everything, I need a list. If I have to gather blocks and tape and paint exc. every morning then I will always feel behind. I prep for my big kid once a week and I will prep for my little one once a week. Anything else and I know it makes me more frustrated and always feeling like I am playing catch-up. It would really make me dislike LHTH if I had to gather things every morning. I just thought that something that had been out for a few years would have a supply list, if not in the book, online. Oh well, I'm up to unit 24 now so I don't have much further to go.

Christina,

I just wanted to pop-in and welcome you to the board! :D Here is a part of a past thread on supply lists that explains why we chose not to put one within our guides:

"I am a list maker as well, but this is one list that would be confusing to make at best. The guides suggest many substitutions and, from the suggested substitutions, I can easily come up with even more substitutions based on the ideas given. For example, the guide said chocolate chips or raisins (which we usually have both on hand but didn't for some strange reason), so we used cocoa puffs. One time we didn't have a bean bag, so we used the rolled sock idea. If I'd been using a list, I'd have gone out and bought bean bags, etc., which I didn't really need anyway. So, long story short, it makes perfect sense not to have a list but instead to appreciate the activities being written in such a way that we do have the things on hand or we have the ability to logically make a substitution. Just try it, you'll see it works great. Of course, you are welcome to do whatever you feel you need to make your school year run smoothly."

We also pay extra to have our guides lay-flat and have a stitched binding that stands the test of time. We did previously offer the guide in spiral binding and had many moms request a more durable type of book, as the covers come off easily when spiral bound. So, we now have a lay-flat binding that is very durable.

We pray that you'll enjoy LHTH as much as we have. We'll be doing it this year ourselves with our own son who is fourth in line at our house! We're looking forward to it! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Here is a link to the yahoo group mentioned: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HomeschoolingHODMoms/
As of right now, I didn't see a supply list for LHTH listed in the files area.

I do cut bindings off of my books and put them in 3 ring binders. That way I can have everything in one place instead of having papers and other assignment lists laying around in other places. I do love how the books lay flat, but a 3 ring binder is better for our family right now.

Thanks everyone. I understand why there is no list but I really have to gather everything for a week at one time, even if I am substituting. I just can't handle gathering everything daily. That probably means I have issues, I'm not surprised

hehe. I have a list of things to keep on hand all year (I will keep everything in a Rubbermaid tote) and then I have weekly lists on post-it notes on the first day of each unit. - so it's not actually typed or I would send it to you now. My planning weekend starts Wednesday. If I manage to get all of my yearly planning done, and my house clean, and still feel the need to do a bunch of typing before rescuing my mom from the kids..... this will be my first project.

Really, if I get to it, I will post it somewhere. I plan to pass LHTH on to my sil when we are done and I would like to help her out as much as possible. Any moment now she will finally have the distinction of being mommy to two kids under two! Eeek!

Anyway, she wants to homeschool and I plan to help get her started. My "baby" is older than her oldest so books will be flowing from here to Oklahoma for years to come. :D
