I am just wondering if anyone has a child with PDD (Persuasive Developmental Disorder) and how things have worked for you? Do you do it at full pace or half. Did they seem to understand and get it? Were you able to include other siblings also and they still payed attention? I have one son with a LD but PDD is very different than his LD so this is new to me. I have the school on my back about getting him in "school" so he can have the socialization that they feel he needs. I will admit that socialization is a big issues with PDD, but wonder if being around his siblings and out about twice a week with other kids is enough for this? To me he seems to be doing okay, but I haven't started school with him yet officially at least. I am thinking about doing LHFHG at half pace with him. He will be six this summer. What are your thoughts on this? I was thinking of starting in August maybe even July with him. I also have five other kids I will be working with, well at least they will be here, two are to little for school and one will be preschool and the other two will be in 2 and 3rd grade work. I was thinking of letting my preschooler tag along with LHFHG. Is there a good special needs forum out there anyone knows of?

LHFHG with a chld with PDD(Persavise developmental disorder)
Re: LHFHG with a chld with PDD(Persavise developmental disorder)
I wouldn't worry about socialization from school. Often children that have ld's and disorders have a much harder time in school settings b/c the children don't understand why they act differently and even with IEP's the teachers don't have the time to help them individually. They will get therapy at school but they will be pulled from their regular class and miss whatever is going on at that time. Often getting behind in the academic part of school.
My neighbor accross the street has a son with Asperger's and he had the hardest time in school. They were worried about socialization and he went through 2 horrible years that really hurt his self-confidence. She pulled him this year when things got horrible and his behavior and socialization skills have actually improved. He spent the majority of his 2nd grade year in a GASP room (basically ISS) before they brought him home. He is in cub scouts, judo, and goes to Mass weekly. He seems to be doing better.
My son had issues in kindergarten. When I mentioned bringing him home for next year, they started talking about socialization. I honestly believe that is the first thing they say to anyone that mentions home schooling.
We started out with LHFHG afterschooling and 1/2 speed works well at first. Now that summer is here, I have added in the things we weren't doing daily and he is doing well. Karate or martial arts really helps also. We did karate last summer and I saw a big improvement in my son.
My neighbor is a member of an online forum for children with ld's and other issues. I will have to get in touch with her for the site address. She is out of town this weekend. If you want it, pm me and I will get it from her ASAP.

edit-my ds6 actually listened better when his sister dd7 started sitting in on our history, science, and storytime. She does the rhymes and stuff with him also.

I agree with Val, don't worry about lack of socialization at home, particularly with many siblings. I was a speech-language pathologist in PS before having kids, and I assure you that he will do better as your student than in a small or large group setting. Does he participate in therapy with any specialists? I have a friend whose oldest son (10ish) has high-functioning autism, and they are missionaries out of the country. They have an SLP visit them at home periodically and provide recommendations specific to their homeschool situation. In their family, they found it helpful to arrange for college students from their church to visit regularly during the week and added some variety to her son's "socialization diet", so to speak. I'm new to HOD, so I can't speak much to that, but easing into LHFHG half-speed sounds reasonable. I bet your 4yo would enjoy parts of it as well. If I was homeschooling older kids too, I'd probably start him and get him into a routine (same time of day, length of time, location etc) before starting up with the older kids. That way he won't be adjusting to something entirely new when they begin.
