new here

Post by NickysDestiny » Sat May 30, 2009 10:46 am

Hi! My name is Nicky and I am very seriously considering going with HOD but I am not sure which one to go with, I looked at the placements and my almost 7 year old could fall into a couple. She should be entering the 2nd grade is one geared more towards a second grader or is it based on age?

The easiest way that I looked at the placement was to print it out and circle in each category the best fit my child fell into it and then I just added up how many circles each guide got and the one with the most was the right one for my kiddo. I did all 3 of the placement tests. The first set with the age, reading, writing, math...is supposed to be the one you weigh your decision heavily upon.
I wouldn't say the guides are geared toward any particular grade, but more geared to the level of skills and maturity that your child is at right now. I personally really like that type of philosophy b/c not all 2nd graders are the same just like not all of our kiddos are the same at the same ages. They do have a general age recommendations with extensions to include some older kiddos if you need to combine.
Welcome and I hope I helped more than confused. :D

Nicky,
Maybe if you posted some specifics about your daughter's abilities, we could be more helpful in placement. Carrie, the author, will often post her suggestions, too.

NickysDestiny,

I just wanted to welcome you to the board! We're glad to have you here! :D We'd love to help you out with placement, if you could just give us a few specifics from the first page of the chart. I believe in another thread that we've established that your child is an emerging reader, which helps in that area.

Next, has your child had some formal spelling and if so, is that an area of strength or a tough area? Then, it would help so much to know if your child can copy a sentence up to a paragraph a day without struggles. It would also help to know if your child has had some or no grammar instruction, how she listens to chapter books read aloud with few to no pictures and whether she'll be using the Singapore math we have scheduled or not?

If you get a chance to pop-in with a few more details, we can advise you much better!

Blessings,
Carrie

Thaks Carrie! I will give you a bit of info on Destiny. I just started homeschooling her in May. So for all of 1st grade she was in a christian school. She can print and write in cursive but we really need to work on both (printing more right now) she does have some issues with certain letters and gets very fustrated when it comes to writing, she really doesnt want to do it. So with that said, writing a sentence she can do (with a fight) but a paragraph is pushing it. She just gives up like its impossible and inconcievable that I would even ask her to do such a thing. She has had spelling, they did 15 words a week and she didn't do so well. When I cut it down to 5 a week she flourished, she would make up her own sentence to use the words in before she would spell them out for me. :D As for grammer, she has had some blends prefixes and suffixes but I do want to work more on them. She likes to listen to me read to her she has tons of questions like why did they do that, how come, thats not true you cant do that.

The math we won't be using.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for sharing about your dd - that really helps so much! I think she would enjoy doing Beyond Little Hearts. It would be a nice fit for your little sweetie. The history is full of wonderful books that she'd enjoy, and the science is great too. The copywork, spelling lists, and grammar introduction would fit her so well, and the Emerging Reader's set schedule is in the back. You'll love the Storytime titles too - though if you're like me, you'll have a tough time picking which set - they're all good.

Beyond is a great program! We will be finishing it up next month. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Nicky'sDestiny,

I agree that Beyond will be an excellent fit for your daughter. We'll be doing Beyond this upcoming year too and are looking forward to it! :D

I just wanted to let you know that there is a folder for Beyond testimonials but there isn't a board strictly for users of Beyond. All posts for HOD products go through the Main Board. There is also a Beyond archived folder with FAQ in it as well. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
