LHTH this summer??? Need input...

Post by pollo_la » Tue May 26, 2009 12:38 pm

Hello everyone!

I started LHFHG with my dd in March (just in case some of you don't remember). For the first month we went about half speed and did one unit over the course of two weeks for the first month (so 2 units the first month). After that, the weather began to get nice and we slowed WAY down. Anyway, the first month was great. My dd is young, but she really did well with everything. I was planning to school over the summer (and still am to some degree), but the pace we are going with LHFHG is just not going to work I think. It is just too disjointed and doesn't flow when you only do "one day's worth" in a week. :D

SO... my thought is this. We never did finish LHTH when I did it with her a couple years ago. Maybe we should just do phonics and 2 or 3 days from LHTH each week this summer. This will give her more time to mature before picking up with LHFHG (she will be 5 in August). She really does well with LHFHG, but I know that she could get even more from it if she was just a bit older. Also, I don't want to get to Beyond too soon, AND as I already pointed out, things are becoming too disjointed at this point to only do 1-2 days a week from the LHFHG guide. So, do you all think this is a good plan? Odessa LOVES school, and she seems to need the structure and routine that school adds to her day, but I just don't know about continuing on with LHFHG this summer.

I think that is a good idea. You already have LHTH and your 2 yr old would probably join in also. You could continue with LHTH until the fall or whenever you wanted to introduce LHFHG. It is a really enjoyable program to go through. It doesn't take very long to do the whole day (30-40 minutes tops). You might would be able to work more quickly through it than you are LHFHG b/c of the quick time frame and format.
It sounds like a good plan to me.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone! One last question... Do any of you think it would be too redundent to do some of the LHTH units with my dd and then cover the same stories again fairly soon after in LHFHG? Although, I guess that is kind of the way the guides are designed, right?

Do you mean the Bible stories? LHTH has great children's Bibles and the stories are wonderful for that age group, but in LHFHG the Bible that you use is a step up for older children and the stories get more detailed. While the essence of the story is the same, your dd will still be interested b/c the story will gain more and more detail and go more in-depth for that age level and maturity.
Even between the younger and older Bible choices for LHTH you will see this progression to more detail and the lesson being told more towards the age and maturity level of the child.
Hope this helps.

Yes, I do mean the Bible stories... Although now that I think about it, I don't think it will be an issue at all. I have been reading and re-reading a lot of these Bible stories to her over the last couple years from various other children's books anyway (and she hears them at Sunday School as well). I think I will go ahead with LHTH this summer then.

I think you have a good plan! :D The guides are designed to dig deeper in the Bible stories in LHFHG - kind of double-dipping if you will, for a more succinct memory of learning Bible stories. My mom used to read from 2 Bible story books every night to my sisters and me at bedtime, from the time I was 2 on up for probably 6-8 years. We called them the "orange book" and the "white book" (the colors of the covers  ), and we LOVED reading them every night. We never grew tired of hearing God's word in story form at those ages. Those nights together are still some of my sisters and my favorites. :D I think LHTH/LHFHG back to back, and then continued Bible through HOD will have the same long-term effect! I bet you'll find that too! :D

Sounds good. I know here I planned one continuing with school but since my daughter did her testing last week and also some decent weather, the books have taken a backseat. I am doing structure playing with my kiddos and my oldest still has math and english to finish but the rest will wait until August.
I don't think children get tired of hearing the stories over and over again. Even my 9 year old still enjoys them. It's just great that now I can have her read the stories to her brother and sister and her and I read from the bible (the same stories) together.
