You learn something new everyday

Post by beandip71 » Wed Feb 13, 2008 9:02 am

I am reading Happy Jack to my kiddos as a read aloud because they just love the Burgess books. We came to a part in the book that talked of Shadow the Weasal killing 3 of Farmer Brown Boys "pullets". My dd said, " Mommy, what is a pullet?". I said, "I have no idea!". So I got out the dictionary and found out a pullet is a hen that is less that a year old. Who knew?! I love how I learn right along w/ my dc. :D

Thanks for the info. We are going to be reading that one in 2 months I think. I think it's great that they asked and didn't just go along with things.

There is an old joke about a pullet. You touch your dd on the forehead and say "here is the chicken" and then touch her chin and say" here is the rooster" and then touch her nose and say "here is the pullet" and then ask her "where is the rooster?" "where is the chicken?" "where is the pullet?" and then give her nose a pull...."You said pullet!"

My kids think those kind of jokes are sooo funny!!

We actually had a weasel get into our coop a few years back and kill our pullets....it was very sad for the kids since we had raised them from tiny chicks.

Thanks for sharing that, Gina!

Gina,

I agree, I really love learning those things along with my daughter. Pullet sounds so much more interesting than baby chick! We have a book around here somewhere that gives the different names of the young offspring of animals. From it, I learned that a baby fish is callled a "fry", never knew that!
