More questions Math when using extensions

Post by simplepamom » Thu May 07, 2009 8:50 am

I believe we are convinced to use BHFHG for my will be 10 and will be 8 yr old. I am looking at the math placements and the scope and sequence they list on that sight as well, and I believe my younger dd should start at 1B and my older should start at 2B (she might fly through that and actually start at 3A, but again, it is so hard to tell, she hasn't memorized her multiplication yet, but is working on it)

Now, in the questions. In the description for Bigger, it says because of the examples in the material you won't need 2a or 2b text.....(you only need the workbooks)-- however, since I am working with children who are using different levels than are presented in the Bigger teachers guide, will I need the math text or teacher's guide or both? I am not quite sure how this will work- I will be teaching on 2 different math levels, and assuming they both start the school year where I think, neither of the levels is where Bigger teachers guide starts in math?? Does that matter?

What will I need to order to make math work for these 2 children (primary math 1 B workbook, text book, teachers guide- one component, all components???)-- then again Primary math 2b- workbook, text book, teachers guide, all, some??)

Thanks
Brenda

The Beyond manual has great activities to use with 1B, Bigger has great activities for 2A and 2B. If you will be in 3A or above you will need the textbooks, as there is not any activities beyond 2B in any of the manuals. If you do not have Beyond manual and don't want to purchase it for the activities than you would need the textbooks for 1B. Hope this helps....

Bigger has activities and things scheduled in it that make needing the textbook for Singapore 2A & 2B unnecessary. It does have 3A & 3B scheduled in it's appendix but for that and all the the books after that you will need to purchase the textbooks as they are included in those schedules. Also you will need to either purchase Beyond for the activities in 1A & 1B or the textbooks for 1A & 1B since they are not scheduled in Bigger. I will be using Singapore Math for the first time this coming year so I am unsure at what level you would need to purchase the Home Instructor's Guide, but I think that it may all depend on how comfortable you are with teaching math. (I believe I have seen it recommended sometime between 4A & 6B).

Brenda,

It's a good idea to give your kiddos the Singapore placement test to make sure that they're correctly placed, as Singapore has a different methodology from many of the programs out there (making placement a bit of a surprise at times).

Here's a link to the placement test: http://www.singaporemath.com/Placement_Test_s/86.htm

I am sorry for the confusion- I did go to the placement for singapore. I pulled them up and actually had my dd's stand at verbally tell me how they would do the problem (more useful in my opinion than if they get the right answer- because for instance, my older dd when give the problems for hte first part of the 2B assessment- she came to me with the right answers on paper-(without showing work)- HOWEVER, in asking her, she could not tell me that the best way to solve was to subtract the addenend we did know from the reaminder to get the other addened that we did not know-- clearly she was not using the BEST method to solve the problem- I believe she was using counting on method)

Anyway, I also took into account that some of what was on those assessments is what we are currently covering (we have a month left of school) my youngest is just learning adding 2 digit numbers- so the 1A section has that, she likely couldn't solve those right now, but before the end of the month, she should be able to solve those. Same with my older adding fractions. I honestly believe the right placements for them are 1B (I am debating starting her at 1A just to make sure she is solid, she has not memorized addition or subtraction facts, but the only thing she didn't really know on 1A was the number bond- because neither of us had ever heard of it- and adding 2 digit numbers because we are covering that now) and 2B based on how they did on the placements, and the scope and sequence-- plus my personal experience with them- my oldest is probably placing more at 3A or maybe even 3B on the placement tests, however, she is not solid in the facts yet, and I really feel that reviewing and spending more time memorizing those facts is to her benefit.

I was more meaning will I Need the texts and teachers manuals if I choose a math level that is not coverd in the curriculum base I choose (if I choose beyond it covers 1a and 1b- would I need teachers and texts etc for 2b..) I think from what has been said that I would. THank you all for your responses.

Is it ok to start with a B section of math course? Or should you start with the A section? I assumed they gave the plalcements that way because you could start with B if that is where they placed.

I think you could start with a B . .My workbooks come as part one and then another woorkbook called part two.I found it all very confusing at first.I am using IB currently with my son who is doing LHFHG.I read Carries instructions, sometimes we do them,if I feel its something DS would benefit from, something that he could do with extra practice on,some things I dont.I personally dont use the Singapore instructers guide .Maybe when we get to 3 a/b we will need them but at the moment I feel the workbooks explain themselves quite well
- Delighted to have used LHTH,LHFHG and Beyond, Bigger , Preparing and DITHOR
currently Using
LHTH slowly with my 2 year old
Starting Bigger with my 8 y/o About to add on DITHOR
Finishing Preparing with my 12year with ASD/LD

Yes, it works fine to start with the 'B' book in a series if that is where your kiddos place best on the placement test. :D

For the teacher directed portion of Singapore, you need to use either the HOD hands-on plans in the HOD guide, or the Singapore Textbooks.

If you choose Beyond...
*younger dd needs just the 1A/1B workbooks
*older daughter needs 2B/3A Textbooks and Workbooks (or, you could get the Bigger Hearts guide for the 2B part and then not get the 2B textbook, but only the 2B workbook)

If you choose Bigger...
*younger dd needs 1A/1B Textbooks and Workbooks, or you could get the Beyond guide for the 1A/1B instruction and then not get the textbooks, but just the 1A/1B workbooks)
*older daughter could use the 2B hands-on plans in the HOD guide along with the 2B Workbook, and then you'd need 3A Textbook and Workbook

The hands-on plans for math in the HOD guides has been wonderful for our dc, so whatever you can utilize of those plans is worthwhile. Whichever above option you choose, there is no need for the Home Instructors Guide until maybe Level 5, and then just for reference. :D
