New to HOD and homeschooling!

Hello,

I am so excited because I received my LHFHG box last week and love it more than I thought I could!! Besides the content being great, I love how it really is open and go! I have a question and tried to search previous posts and cannot answer my question. I have a 4 1/2 girl (she will be 5 in Nov). She is advanced for her age in math and phonics. She counts to 120 and does simple addition. She also had pretty much taught herself to read short words. I ordered LHFHG because of those reasons plus I love the CLP books it comes with..hehe! I am starting to wonder though if I should wait to teach her all the info, such as the History and Science. She is listening, but I am not sure if she is actually "getting" it. I am afraid we will go through all these amazing books and her not gain what she should from them. Would it be better to do LHTH w/ her current phonics and math and then do LHTH a little later w/ her new phonics and maths books at that time. I also have a son who will be 3 in June.

Again, I am just so excited about this curriculum. After over a year of researching and prayer, God gave me the peace to order this and I am so thankful for it

I just wanted to pop-in and welcome you to the boards! We're glad to have you here!

When beginning LHFHG, it does take time for kiddos to grow into the readings, as they are very meaty! Yet, your child will retain more than you think over time. I remember the first time I read History for Little Pilgrims. I was amazed at how wonderfully written it was and how much I gained from it, and I wanted my sons to soak it all up too. But, it's important to remember that while we have more of a frame of reference in our mind of how all of history fits together, our little ones are still a long way away from grasping the flow of time. So, what they'll take from it will be more along the lines of enjoying a good story. That's why we love the layered approach at HOD, as it gives kiddos a chance to interact within the same time period in several different ways within several years time. With each passing year, the gaps in the layers get filled a bit more!

As far as your daughter goes, it does seem like she's ready for LHFGH. However, if you're desiring to combine her with your son, then you could consider doing LHTH with both of them and just adding the right side only of LHFHG (with the kindergarten options) for your daughter. Then, the following year, you could possibly move both kiddos up to LHFHG together and your daughter could do the first grade options. The potential problem with this idea is that your next little one in line may not be ready to head into LHFHG the following year as he'd only be 4, but you could remedy that by slowing down LHFHG if needed.

We do run separate programs at our house and enjoy doing it that way, and other ladies on the board combine and love that instead. So, it's something to weigh in finding the best fit for you!

Thank you so much Carrie!! That was very helpful! I think I will continue on w/ LHFHG and just move slowly if needed. Its nice to know the same things will be covered in the future w/ the gaps being filled in. In a few months, I may start my son on LHTH. Thank you again for your help and for allowing God to use you to create this wonderful program!

P.S. I was so excited when I saw the literature book selections in the back of the book so go along w/ the units!!

i think you could try the LHFHG history and if it doesn't work , then just take it slowly. i have been doing LHFHG with my son since he was about 4 1/2 and we take it slowly.he is 5 1/2 and he does fine. we are taking 1 1/2 to 2 yrs to do it.

i have a daughter who just turned 4 in March. i could tell my daughter wasn't ready for the history part of LHFHG. and she loves LHTH. she is right at her age level for that.

Sounds like you have figured out a plan, I just wanted to say welcome to HOD! I'm sure you will have a great time going through it with your daughter! And good for you that you get to start her out with HOD. It has been such a blessing to us. I look forward to hearing more from you on the boards.

Welcome to the HOD board, and we took about a year and a half to go through LHFHG too. It worked perfectly for my ds! I think you'll enjoy that as well.
