Okay, maybe I'm planning too far ahead but...

Post by sted » Tue Apr 28, 2009 10:09 pm

I haven't even started using HOD yet but I'm finding myself drawn to it so I'm trying to figure out a bit of a long range plan.

My major problem is, if I use a "higher" level language arts for a child now, does that mess up future years. For instance, if I am using Bigger and using Preparing or even CTC for the right side now, what will I do next year for language arts? It also seems that in Preparing or CTC are more closely tied to the historical theme, so is it even possible to do this or do I need to really "tweak". I love the idea of following a program completely but I always find I need to "tweek" which I am trying not to do with this.

Thanks,
Shannon

Shannon, I'm probably not a good one to answer you but for my 11 yr old using Bigger I am using R&S 4 and I just bought the Preparing manual for that lesson plan and for dictation passages. I am beginning Preparing in July and hope to condense it into 6 months so we can fit in all of Carrie's new guides plus CTC before high school. I am either going to purchase the CTC guide to help us with LA for Preparing if we finish everything in R&S 4or use the worksheet sets from R&S for capitalization & punc., parts of speech and something else, I forgot the name. I am toying with using those for him with Preparing since we are condensing it anyway. I may go that route instead. They should be a good review for him. They are suited for grades 3-5 and they also have a set for 6-8 that you may be able to use for you dc for review. I believe their LA only goes to 9th or 10th maybe. From what I've seen Carrie's LA plans are 1 or 2 lessons daily so that should be an easy schedule to figure out on my own from the normal English guides. Sorry to ramble, HTH!!

Shannon,

I agree that it is quite easy to use the language arts and math from the next guide up along with doing the history portion from another guide. Depending on which levels and what areas you'd be using from the right side of the guide, you may not need to get another guide the next year (as each guide has two levels of language arts, math, and 3 levels of dictation).

The wonderful news is that you can customize the programs prettily easily to get a good fit for each of your children without needing to purchase a guide for each subject area (like I've had to do in past years with my oldest). HOD has less guide juggling than almost any program out there! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
