Spelling in Beyond

Post by ShellyM » Wed Apr 15, 2009 8:35 am

I am looking at Beyond for my 7 yo for next year, and I have a question about spelling. It looks like there is spelling instruction included, is it just a list of words, or are spelling rules taught as well?

I was originally going to get Rod and Staff's Spelling by Sound and Structure to use for next year and I know a good foundation of learning the spelling rules is established. I didn't effectively make sure those were taught to my oldest, now 12, and she has a terrible time spelling. She would probably still have problems even if she didn't know all the spelling rules, but knowing them better maybe would help her spell better maybe.

Thanks!
Shelly

Each set of spelling lists follows a pattern. CM style instruction for words is included in the LA box of Beyond. We did the spelling lists and moved into the dictation as HOD suggests and have been very happy with the results. :D My ds had speech difficulties early on, and I've been amazed at how well he is spelling using these methods. They seem so simple and too "good to be true" - but they really work! I used to add R & S spelling as well, but dropped it after a half a year when my ds just passed his R & S test of words, and then spelled 2 of those words wrong right after that in his own writing. We switched to just doing dictation at that point, and we have not looked back. :D It seems like this method has helped him use correct spelling within his own writing. HTH - but remember, if you want to add more spelling you surely can. There is enough time leftover for that - I just wanted to share that from my experience of doing that, it wasn't necessary.
