For the Bigger set, are the Extension books for olders kids scheduled? Would the readers count for DITHOR and could the readers be also used for story-time for younger kids?
Still confused, sorry,
Shannon

Re: Extension question - still confused
The Extension books are EXTRA history reading. They are scheduled in the appendix. They are separate from DITHOR or Storytime. They are meant to enhance the learning for older students by reading to themselves. That said, my kids are 8 and 6, we read them as extra read alouds. We don't read A Child's Story of America or Exploring Planet Earth, but we read the stories. Both my kids love to hear them.
Hmmm, let me correct this. Some (maybe all) of the extension books are listed as Storytime Choices. So you could read them for your Storytime book.

OK:
Only 4 of the Extension Books are also listed as Storytime choices:
Ben and Me
The Buffalo Knife
By the Great Horn Spoon
Esperanza Rising
Does that answer your question or confuse you more?

Shannon,
netpea did a great job of helping you. The Extension Pack books are only meant for an older student to read on their own to extend the learning to their level. They are meant for 4th and 5th graders (or older). The books are scheduled in the Appendix, telling the student which pages to read daily. This would be in addition to the history and science read-alouds scheduled in Bigger Hearts. A suggested schedule is given for follow-up narrations for after reading for the Extension Pack.
Some moms do use the Extension Pack readings for reading aloud to all their kiddos (in addition to the Storytime readings), because they hate to miss out on any wonderful books! They are reading families though, so it is not necessary to do that.
Next, the storytime books are from your choice of either the Boy, Girl, or Classic Set. These are books YOU will read-aloud to your kiddos and include one book from each of the 9 genres.
Last, the DITHR books are different sets of books that your kiddos will read along with DITHR. The difference here is that your CHILD will be reading these books, rather than you. You can use any books you choose with DITHR, so there's no need to use a book pack unless you prefer to have the choosing done for you in this area.
Clear as mud?
Blessings,
Carrie
