When to use extensions?

Post by Mumkins » Mon Mar 16, 2009 1:29 pm

My DD will be doing beyond this year in grade 3 at 8 years old. If she does bigger next year, she'll be 9 and in grade 4. It says for 7-9 year olds, but has an extension for grade 4 and 5. I'm confused why she'd need an extenstion when she's falling in the right age catagory and how do I know if my DD need one?

Hi Mumkins,
I am new to HOD. Will be using in the fall, but it is my understanding that it would basically depend on whether you feel the history and science is advanced enough for your dd. If you wanted to add more advanced material that she would read independently, then you would add the extension package. From what I've read on this board, though, the history and science would probably be enough for your dd and it would not be necessary to use the extension package unless you wanted to. You know your dd best so if you feel she needs to be challenged more, use the extensions package, but it's definitely not necessary and you could do Bigger "as is".
I'm sure other, more experienced users of HOD will chime in with some great advice.
Blessings,
Kathy

I think depending on a child's bday, some could be 9 in 4th grade, but most are 10 in 4th grade...that's where the extensions come in handy. You could go either way with your dd...if she would enjoy the extension pack, you could add it. If you like to read aloud, you could add it. It wouldn't be a "must-have" though since she's in the age bracket for Bigger-- just depends if you are judging by age or grade-- clear as mud? LOL

My dd will be 8 and in the 3rd grade doing Bigger soon...she LOVES to read so I picked out a few of the extension pack books to add it for her. I won't have her answer any questions about them or make them "school"...but since reading is a favorite activity for her, I liked having something to go with our history studies :D So, you could skip them or get them as part of the lesson or get them as part of fun reading time....it's your call!
